OpenBSD running on Quad Core MacPro with Virtual Box.
Anybody out there interested in using Sun's Virtual Box to run OpenBSD on their Mac will have any easy time setting it up. I'm running OpenBSD 4.6 on one virtual machine. Now I have a laptop with OpenBSD running and a desktop.

There is a long history of developer hatred for VirtualBox, it does not properly emulate the x86 according to them.
http://marc.info/?l=openbsd-misc&m=120492689515501&w=2 If you read the mailing lists, you'll find all sorts of horror stories related to it. Just say NO to virtualization, not worth the risks. |

I'm going to take the Virtual Box off my Mac.
It's kinda buggy once you start using it.

Somehow I don't like virtualization. I feel a lag on anything I run in virtualization. It's better to put systems on smaller devices that can be operated independently of a larger system made of such smaller machines. Cluster small computers when you need the power and use the smaller machines as mobile connections to the larger stationary system.

I run Windoz 2003 Enterprise Server 64bit on my only Windoz desktop (specs below), which does my virtualization as well (testing/support). Inside of that (VMWare workstation 7) i virutalize my MacOS 10.62 install (support reasons) and an XP Pro install (support reasons). Each VM sits on part of a different hard disk, (i posted a couple of performace tweaks (VMWorkstation 7) on another post, will find link later) that dramatically improve performace. I agree Sun's VirutalBox is crappy, don't let it influence your whole opinion on virutalization though. Specs; Intel Q6600 @ 2.4ghz 8gb Corsair Dominator 1066DDR2 2x35gb WD Raptors (1 boot , 1 tmp files) 2x640GB WD Blacks (1 FTP files, 1 documentaries) MacOS VM sits on one of the 640GB HDD's and gets 2GB of ram and 2 cores XPPro VM sits on the other 640GB HDD and gets 1GB of ram and 1 core They both run SMOOTH as hell ...... the MacOS VM took a bit more tweaking.

I'm using VMWare Fusion and I see that virtualization is not bad at all, but quite satisfying. Running OpenBSD in Fusion is definitely the way to go. Tried it in Parallels, but it didn't quite work the way I wanted it to. Configuring full screen was difficult in Parallels, but Fusion does it automatically. I like using OpenBSD on my Desktop machine better than the laptop. I guess I like to use my large monitor instead of peeking at the small screen my laptop provides. If feel free when I use OpenBSD, but tied down when I use other operating systems like Windows or Leopard. I am grateful Leopard is built around FreeBSD. That's what lead me to OpenBSD. Tinkering with the Unix on OS X.

Cool, now that your sold on OpenBSD, virtualized or not, don't forget to donate something or purchase shirts or cd's or whatever you like, these guys are working for almost free, and if your non-girly enough maybe an OpenBSD tattoo

Yes. I definitely can't wait to order an OpenBSD set. The first thing I'll do is take off the Apple sticker on the back of my car and replace it with an OpenBSD sticker. I want to get a t-shirt and wear it in the Apple Store at the mall.

Just me, but i would keep the Apple sticker and maybe position Puffy to look like he's bitten into it, tee hee hee ....

Ordered OpenBSD 4.6 earlier today.
I'm planning on collecting all the CD's over time. I might have to wait and get the set for $1,000 a little later when I have the money to spend. I'd like to get all the t-shirts too. Maybe wear an OpenBSD t-shirt everyday. And the posters, I'll frame and put them all over the room. OpenBSD is built like no other Operating System. It even has it's own soundtrack. How cool is that?
