Default Other platforms and their OSes

Did you ever try other platform than classical PC (x86-64) as PPC, VAX, PDP-11, Atari, z/Architecture...? I just saw to one collector soviet BK Elektronika (clone of PDP-11) with own DOS system, I think ANDOS...Looking cool but old.

I have a few alternate arch's at home. Sparcs are pretty common, as are PPC. I'm looking to get a loongson and alpha sometime down the road for more thorough ports testing for the OpenBSD ports I maintain. I'd love to get a VAX or PDP.

Edit - I seem to have overlooked one portion of the OP's question..."and their OS's". Can't say that I have, as nearly everything I have currently runs OpenBSD. I've had other OS's in the past, of course, but they're long gone and forgotten.

This is from memory, which is quite faded now.

Platform, OSes

  • HP-3000, MPE
  • DEC System-10, TOPS-10
  • System/360, TOS
  • System/370 and compatibles of all kinds, DOS, OS/VS, VM/370, VM/HPO, VM/XA, MVS, MVS/XA, UTS
  • IMSAI 8800, CP/M
  • Commodore Pet, MS Basic
  • Compucolor II, MS Basic
  • Zilog Z80, CP/M
  • Nixdorf <something>, CP/M
  • Sycor, <something>
  • Honeywell 6000, Multics
  • DEC PDP-8a and 8/I and 8/L, <something>
  • DEC PDP-11, IRIX
  • Sun platforms of all sorts, SunOS, Solaris
  • AIX platforms of all sorts, AIX
  • Various proprietary servers over the years, with various OSes, too many now to remember or even count. Some vector processors, some massively parallel machines, too.
  • MP/M and various *nix systems on various servers of various types over the years.
  • PCs: PC-DOS, MS-DOS, Windows 3.1 and upwards, Unixes, Linuxes, BSDs, even Hurd just to see it.
  • HTC Glacier: CM7
  • Many more systems I have entirely forgotten.
I have never owned a MAC, but I have borrowed an iPhone and fondled an iPad.

I think that's how they were intended to be used.

I remember seeing a guy fondle an iPad like a camera, needless to say I laughed hysterically.

I have 2 alpha's both have FreeBSD on them, but I'd like to get a copy of Tru64, VMS or something along those lines to run on one of them.

I once had an IBM-RT account with AIX. Didn't know anything about Unix then, just used it for email.

Also had some kind of mainframe account that used the most gawdawful satanic hell UI, called Mantes, that I could ever imagine.

ZX81
Commodore 64
Amstrad 128
Atari 520
Amiga 1000
MicroVAX 3100 (Digital Unix)
SGI Indy (Irix)
X-terminal (Solaris) connected to SUN Ultra 400
Various SUN stations (I currently use Blade 1000 as my developmental platform but it runs OpenBSD )
I am sure I had one of AlphaStations running True64 Unix.
I vividly remember using VMS on some VAX main frame through out my studies in Belgrade.

The first operating system I tried was CMS on IBM 360. My late mother used to work on those in seventies. I actually learned some Cobol when I was probably 6 or 7.

At this point I run OpenBSD on everything I control but two computers. One GPU based runs Scientific Linux and my wife's laptop runs Windows 7.

I always wanted to have one of those Sparc based Tadpole laptops. Never had a chance to have one because of the price.

I am sure I used something Motorola 68000 based (if nothing else I think I have calculator with that chip) but I have never had anything MAC PPC.

Probably the weirdest OS I tried was Plan 9

Do you mind asking me what ports you maintain?

umurmur and protobuf-c.

umurmur because I wanted to replace TeamSpeak and Ventrilo with free alternatives, and protobuf-c because umurmur depends on it.

I'd pick up more, but I honestly don't have enough time for even these two haha.
