Default KDE on Open Solaris

hi

i am just curious about Kde and XFCE how it will look if installed on Open Solaris.

i am hoping it does not look as bad as Belenix version of KDE with all those split categories on start menu if you want to call it a start menu.

i just found that part of Belenix to be very Ugly and nothing like the way FreeBSD looks with KDE.

i tried to install XFCE but i may have gotten a wrong version.
its so confusing they have too many versions out there and i do not always know which to use.

Also i am curious why it seems Solaris 10 seems faster then Open Solairs.

i know why it was slower i had something else running on a different network machine.
Web pages were slower is what i meant to say anyways.

Then i got to wondering is Open Solaris nothing but GNU rather then Unix.

i see they are battling with linux yet they are using what they can to give people the
idea that they are using GNU as well as Unix Solaris.

IN other words borrowing things Like Bill gates did with Winblows.?

i am not passing judgement on anyone or saying anything bad about their operating systems, but i guess i am just curious whats going on with them and indiana project and why.

Excuse the way i type please.i still need some help with the way i structure my words and Sentences or paragraphs as im never realy clear how to do it like everyone else does.

i was dislexis as a child and got through alot but still have a hard time doing things the way other people do them.

Even my fonts on my own web page look horrible.
bad size for the fonts and a bad format.

- solaris 10 faster than opensolaris
not sure ..... i would have thought they'd be quite similar

-open solaris nothing but linux and GNU rather then unix
opensolaris is just further developed solaris with some GNU crap thrown in

-borrowing things like Bill gates
perhaps but opensolaris is run developed with sun not against them

Default hi

Oh hello Corey

Yes i guess it is the same and i had thought maybe it had something to do with a vid or ethernet driver as web pages are not as fast.but then it dawned on me

How silly i am.i forgot my boyfriend is downloading 3 torrents at a time from the network pc.
No wonder lol

But i do know something feels different about Open Solaris as to opsed to Solaris 10 and i cant put my finger on it.

Maybe it is the ubuntu like features that were
not there before.

i have to say i did like having CDE in there though
and now its not there on Open Solaris.

Fluxbox wow i tried it once and it was too complicated for me but it was very nice fast and compact.

i like Gnome Kde CdE and Xfce

Right now using Gnome on Open Solaris.
It is Simple and less congested then KDE
even though i still want KDE lol

i guess i always want something that will remind me more of FreeBSD rather then Ubuntu.

Solaris and BSD Mixed together BSolarisD, or SlowarSD

I would guess that opensolaris is less polished than solaris express. I've tried both and had many more problems with opensolaris. That may have changed as sun has provided more resources to project indiana.

Then there is Solaris Express which is really just everything you are going to see on the new release of Solaris.

Solaris Express b87 X86 had Compiz but it acted buggy when i changed the theme.and i was unable to get my Dektop normal again even after turning Compiz off.

So i installed 05/08 OpenSolaris with Compiz
and there are no bugs on this Compiz that i can see.

Funny i dont even use Compiz now
i just wanted tp play with it a bit .

KDE is KDE for the most part, things like menu's and such can be kicked and punched into ones preference with ease (like most of KDE3 imho).

I'm not sure how much of the entire KDE system and extra gears will compile on Solaris but all of the important things should work, I would hope, other wise I would take testing Solaris off my "to do someday" list !!!

@ heatherval, your writing might not be the best structured or quality of English on earth but at least it is understandable :-).

I've seen people with writing that make yours look like the work an English Professor by comparison to theirs lol.

Smile hi

Thank You

Well i am glad Terry you understand me and i hope to improve in time
with all of my problems with sentence or paragraph Structure.

Some of you remember i am sure when i first started the Old forum
how i typed almost every 5 words with the wrong spelling.

Most of you told me not to forget to use capital letters in beginning of a sentence and a period and the end.

i have been told off a few times about it,and had been trying very hard to get it right,Especially from my friend fmj here who has contributed alot in most of my improvements.

He also kept reminding me to use spelling checker
which i do not use as i find it annoying and do not know how to teach it to spell the right words.

When i finally studied to get my GED because i was a drop out
i found i started to like English grammar more and more.

i was an abused and tormented as a child and was sent to boarding schools
after all that and still met people that were not good to me.

i was never really exposed to the real world till many years later or even allowed to see it.

When i was dislexis and was taught by a special teacher how to say and speak words properly by making shapes with my mouth She was such a good teacher that i was reading 7th grade books when i was only in 1st grade.

But i need to see things at times more in a cartoon way or pictorial way
Only sometimes if i get too confused at what i am reading.

Ok so i know how to get my wireless router up and running and configure Static Ip addresses. But i still lack common sense everyone else has.

fmj was the one who taught me how Install BSD from minimal.
then do everything by ports and to build a custom kernel and was going to teach me more about Shell commands.

i have a few books and from time to time practice with the commands
and remember the ones i find the most important and useful.

Alot of people think i do not like to read manuals. But in fact i love to read and find out things long before i even ask them here from google usually i look.
and i do not always find what i need.

i just find the manual awfully confusing with all them brackets and commas
and semicolons and so on and so on.

Even when i do a help command i do not know what i am reading.
Like the time i looked up help for my dvd drive the help options i did not even understand because it looks all garbled to me.

So now that may explains a little bit about myself even though this may not be the place to say all of that but i kind of see all of you as sort of a family.
that i can say things to that is on my mind if thats ok for now.

i may not be the best twipist but i am an exciilint speeler

Sometimes the only way to get assistance from a
salesperson in a store is if you look suspicious.

I didn't say not to post content like this - i said, what you're posting is off topic!

If you wish to tell your life story, simply make a new thread about it.

You're wrong on the second point. OpenSolaris is not Linux. Also, fact is whether you like it or not, most Unices these days include some GNU software.

Here is rk stirrin' up an old post..

OpenSolaris is Solaris model of the
RedHat/Fedora
Suse/OpenSuse
models..

OpenSolaris is *also* the proving grounds for the new package management system that *might* show up in Solaris 11...

Sun hired Ian (creator of Debian Linux).. hmm.. package management.. sounds like Sun is following suite like all the other *BSD's and Linuces..

Borrowing from Linux is more like it..

Ian's apt-get package management system is now IMHO the defacto standard on the most popular Linuces..

There are different flavors of OpenSolaris as previously stated; however, I only use the OEM release since that is what we use at work..

And Corey.. OpenSolaris aint Linux ..
