Default OpenBSD 4.8-beta announced!

-current is now labeled 4.8-beta by Theo.

http://marc.info/?l=openbsd-cvs&m=127998563907330&w=2

...and there was dancing in the streets.

Those that have extra hardware available are urged to install -current as this is the time to put it to real-world usage. Problems identified now may possibly be fixed before the official release in November.

Lots of nice changes going in lately, done some testing here and it's great.. looking forward to the release, which might be before November, not sure.

For those unfamiliar, the changelog is great fodder for salivation. OpenBSD 4.8 will be yet another tasty treat in a long line of delectable releases.

Dang, they get more work done in <6 months than Japanese Beavers working double Chinese overtime!

Yeah, it's crazy how long that changelog was. I'll have to track -current and test it out myself.

The changes going into 4.8 aren't even near completion yet, locale support was just committed.. still has some kinks to work out.

Others reading the lists also know that Xserver 1.8 should end up in the release, this includes toys like Xinput2 (..MPX) and the VGA arbiter (..dual-card support).

Given the lead time needed to mass produce the official CD sets, CVS tagging for 4.8 will likely be sometime in August-September depending upon problems encountered, goals of refining (exposed) functionality, etc. Past experience indicates that Labor Day is a reasonable guess.

Yeah, I read it yesterday.

It's not complete yet, but as I read it they're aiming for 4.9 as fully "utf-8 enabled".

Excellent! I am surprised the UTF-8 support progressed this quickly.

As should be noted, support in wscons(4) isn't really possible.. not for much of the extended characters in unicode, they simply can't be displayed with the default VGA fonts, so you'll need X and a UTF8 compatible terminal (xterm/etc) to actually play around with the fancy stuff.

It's not an easy thing to get right, Unix never really was designed to take advantage of "funny" characters.. it's an ASCII world with some kludges, and personally that's why I love it.

It would be nice to be able to modify my profile to use UTF-8 on OpenBSD 4.9+ with a suitable terminal, instead of changing my locale settings for OpenBSD...

My profile already does something similar for FreeBSD + cons25.

Would be nice to see this commitment with just few people in FreeBSD. They have even on the desktop some very nice developments :-)
