Default Hello from an experienced newbie

Hi. I'm new to Daemon Forums, but not necessarily to Unix. I first started using Linux in 1999, but kept distro-hopping because I never found a distribution that felt right. I also found that many Linux communities have become toxic over the years for various reasons.

I've been keeping an eye on the OpenBSD project for years because of their reputation for consistently developing a well-engineered system, and a couple of weeks ago I decided to listen to the voice in my head that kept singing, "I want my... I want my... I want my BSD" and took the plunge with the 6.2 release.

Now I'm here. Maybe I can help, but I'm mainly here to learn. I've managed reasonably well thus far using OpenBSD instead of Linux in a desktop/laptop environment where I mess around on the web, deal with email, rip CDs and play music, and use Emacs to write and code. However, being my own sysadmin doesn't make me the equal of pros who admin dozens or hundreds of machines for a living.

Thanks, hanzer. I see you're a Deus Ex fan. I know an author you might enjoy if you're interested.

Welcome.

"Smartphones vs Personal Computers" just about sums up my thoughts on that matter. Well said.

Sadly in a purely profit driven world, the practical solutions often fall by the wayside.

A toy/fashion accessory with firmware which can't be updated, once the vendor ends support, no option to change OS and which is made cheaply in the far east and sold in the west, with a huge margin, is always going be more profitable - especially with what amounts to planned obsolescence as standard.

Thanks. I'm going to have to update that post to take Purism's Librem phone into account. If they manage to go to production, we'll finally have a modern handheld that runs an actual GNU/Linux distribution instead of Android or iOS.

I'm tempted to buy two once they come out so I can donate one to the OpenBSD project, but my wife would have kittens if I spent a grand to buy two fancy smartphones and then gave one away. Maybe I should buy three so she can have one, too.

The current version of my website promises a lot and doesn't deliver, but I'm working on it. Sorry about that.

I've run into a little snag because when I try to build my site using Jekyll on OpenBSD, it dies screaming with a "too many files" error. So I'm migrating away from Jekyll.

Hi there. Don't be surprised if you see me on the NYC*BUG mailing list or IRC since there isn't a BUG for Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, or PA as a whole. I guess there aren't a lot of BSD users at CMU.

I had switched from Gentoo (which I had installed from stage one over 56K dialup) to Ubuntu when it first came out in October 2004 because I was getting married and didn't want to fuck it up by neglecting my wife to tinker. I probably should have switched to a BSD instead back then, but learning to be a halfway decent husband was more important.

I remember lots of Gentoo, Slack, and BSD folk getting married, or maybe having kids and switching to Ubuntu. (Or similar).

Welcome! I'm a newcomer to OpenBSD as well; I've been running it since 5.0. This is my go to BSD forum.
