I use a usb wifi dongle that uses the urtwn driver. When my laptop boots, its not seen, I have to reboot for it to work. Happens every time, no matter what computer I put it in. Any ideas?

This is a common chipset. I own one of these dongles with the same chipset - it is currently in-use and working on an OpenBSD/amd64 6.3 system deployed by a family member.

Some of these low cost dongles have been reported to be "flaky." I experience this myself - the one I have now was the second I received from a vendor, as the first was non-operational.

Power management via the driver has been problematic - but the symptoms affect heat management, not recognition of the device.

...which is also my experience with using these cheap urtwn(4) dongles, but their performance has been stable. woomia, you basically have two choices:
  • Try installing -current on the chance that ”something” has settled down in the few months of development that has transpired since -release, or...
  • Try a different Realtek dongle.
Personally, I think the second choice is more promising.

I have 2 Addon NWU271 USB wifi sticks which use the same driver & haven't had any problems, but I did buy them a while ago.

I also have a TPLink TL-WN822N external/desktop wifi that works well with OpenBSD.
