Default MINIX 3.3.0 is Available Now

From http://www.minix3.org/330.html

Quote:
The new version, MINIX 3.3.0, has a number of key features:
  • The system is based on a tiny (12,700 lines of code) microkernel
  • The microkernel handles interrupts and message passing and is the only code running in kernel mode.
  • The rest of the operating system runs as a collection of isolated, protected, user-mode processes
  • Each device driver is a separate user-mode process isolated by the MMU hardware
  • If a driver crashes, the system automatically restarts it, with running applications not even noticing
  • This means that MINIX 3.3.0 is self-healing
  • Userland is largely compatible with NetBSD and runs thousands of NetBSD packages
  • By combining an innovative self-healing research OS with NetBSD userland, we got the best of both worlds
  • Both the clang/LLVM and gcc compilers are available, as well as perl, python, etc.
  • MINIX 3.3.0 is available for both the x86 and ARM Cortex A8 architectures, making it ideal for embedded systems
  • Tools for cross compiling MINIX 3 for the ARM on Linux are provided
  • Ports are available now for the BeagleBoard XM, BeagleBone white, and BeagleBone black
  • Extensive documentation is available in the MINIX 3 wiki
  • The code has been improved over MINIX 3.2.1 in hundreds of ways, leading to a cleaner and more reliable system

An hour (estimated) to get a downloaded image is ridiculous, it is only 288mb!
Was going to try it, but the project is obviously not interested in getting new users!

I see MINIX has come a long way since I bought Tanenbaum's book a decade ago. That's good!

So you can run X on Minix I see from the user's guide (X for the new version still to come), but this would be the Vesa driver I assume, or at least have no acceleration, no drm. Also I see no mention of audio. Can Minix play movies and songs?

This isn't meant as criticism, only wondering whether this could be something I could use for my main system unless/until some wonderful soul adds kernel nvidia/nouveau drm support to OpenBSD. Probably not, eh?

Under hardware requirements, it mentions supporting a small number of audio cards.
Don't know what it can do with them.

I had installed 3.3 on VirtualBox 4.14 on my Linux host. So far, I had no luck getting networking up. Tried all the different appraoches mentioned in the wiki and sparse information found so far on web, no luck. Even on the #minix IRC channel nobody had any idea last I asked about it yesterday. I'm off to download 3.2.1 and see if the issue exists with that one too.
xorg is not by default installed I see.

Regards.

I think it has more to do with the fact that Andrew is now retired from his regular duties at Vrije Universiteit and probably is in good health for his 70 years of age
