Default ZFS: how to mountroot or rescue?

New FreeBSD install on ZFS ran perfectly but after a power cut I got mountroot> promt. On ufs usually one of devices listed after "?" is bootable than fsck...and voila. But under zfs none of listed valid boot devices can be booted.
Of course I can just reinstall from scratch but powercuts happen...so must be another option to rescue. Does somebody know?

Default

The installation is alive.
/boot/loader.conf was empty somehow...
After restoring boots fine to mountroot> prompt and zfs:tank does the job.
However the question remains: why it doesn't boot normally but goes now to mountroot> first?
