Default OpenBSD 4.6 Only Detects 256Megs of Ram in a Box with 1GB

Hi people, this is my first post so hello from Cuba.

My problem is that ( see title ), and
this is part of the output from dmesg:

real mem = 267747328 (255MB)
avail mem = 250056704 (238MB)

mi cpu is:

cpu0: Intel(R) Xeon(TM) CPU 3.00GHz ("GenuineIntel" 686-class) 3 GHz
cpu1: Intel(R) Xeon(TM) CPU 3.00GHz ("GenuineIntel" 686-class) 3 GHz
cpu2: Intel(R) Xeon(TM) CPU 3.00GHz ("GenuineIntel" 686-class) 3 GHz
cpu3: Intel(R) Xeon(TM) CPU 3.00GHz ("GenuineIntel" 686-class) 3 GHz

This is a Server Dell PowerEdge 1800 series, and it has 1GB of Physical RAM
installed in two modules of 512 each.

I need to know what to change to make openbsd recognize all ram.

PS: Last Month I have Ubuntu Server 9.04 Installed on this box, and It recognize all ram.

Greetings from Cuba, sorry for my bad english, thank you very much.

LeaL

Welcome!

There are no knobs or settings to "turn on" your memory.

Please post a complete dmesg. We don't even know if you are using i386 or amd64. Both should be able to address 3GB of RAM.

Hello and welcome!

Check if the full 1GB is recognized in the machine's BIOS. The fact that it worked fine last month says very little about the current working state Running a memory test from http://www.memtest.org also never hurts.

Also make sure you've installed the memory modules in the correct position and that these are the correct memory modules for this board. Check your manual and assume nothing, this has bitten me quite a few times unfortunately where I was too lazy to check the manual.

In my experience it is always best to make 100% sure your hardware is fine first when there is even the slightest doubt if may not be OK, and then move on to the software when you've checked the hardware.

The boot(8) program passes a memory map obtained from the system BIOS, it contains a list of valid memory regions that the kernel can use.

You can check the output of machine memory and see if the map appears invalid, if so it could indicate that the BIOS is not detecting the installed memory as suggested by Carpetsmoker.

If other OS's do properly detect the memory is may be a bug, manually overriding the detected memory is possible from the boot program.. but dangerous if some other memory mapped device is in the area.

Good luck, be sure to check for defective modules.. improperly seated modules.. or some sort of new fangled memory suppression option in the BIOS.

The posted dmesg(8) output was not complete. You may want to consider posting the entire contents of /var/run/dmesg.boot.

According to http://support.dell.com they recommend the "A07" version of the BIOS from November 2006.

Here is a link to a dmesg from someone else's PowerEdge 1800, using a much older release of OpenBSD (3.8). They saw all of their memory, and were using the same A05 BIOS you are using:

I found this searching Google:

http://en.community.dell.com/support....aspx#18091903

Appears to be your problem, but, upgrading your BIOS is also a good idea.. as suggested.
