Wow! This comes just as I'm moving from Ruby to Python. I love Python's socket programming and am hoping it gets me ready to take on C socket programming. Looks like I'm going to be learning a new version of Rails soon. Dang.

Sockets are mostly sockets where ever you go, Pythons will be familiar enough to a C programmer and doing the inverse. Last time I played with Rubies interface, it was less so like BSD sockets, but still easy to use.
