Default IP Printer Setup

Hello,

I am working on moving my customers away from MS Servers for file and print sharing. I would like to use FBSD and have it installed on one of our test systems.

Current setup: Currently I use MS W2K servers with HP printers and jetdirects. The printers are installed on the server and then shared on the network for client systems. I do this so the server can take over the spooling workload.

My question is this: I have searched google for IP printing or network printing etc using unix or FreeBSD and cannot locate what I am looking for. Is it possible to setup network printers on a FBSD system? I know I can use SAMBA for the shares. Where or what config file needs to be altered with the IP address etc of the network printer?

Thank you in advance
Kell

CUPS will allow you to access network printers and talks JetDirect. I use it on a Konica Networked printer.

Samba+CUPS or lpd(8) with Ghostscript optionally?

LPD/LPR is RFC standardized, and I do believe Windows supports it.. A tutorial for configuring your Windows clients can be found here, Some "IP Printers" actually have an LPR daemon built in...

Hope that helps.. In the future, use the FreeBSD handbook.

BSDfan666,

Thank you for the reply. I followed the link to the handbook and read thru the Printing section. It mentions that LPD/LPR can communicate via 3 types of connections: Serial, Parallel, and USB.

I am looking for a TCP/IP solution.

It is interesting that the other link that you mentioned for the Windows setup for LPD has a place for an IP address. I understand the configuration setup on the Windows. The information that I am looking for is the documentation and or guidence for setting up an IP addressable printer on FreeBSD. Apparently under LPD/LPR there must be a place to insert the IP address of the network printer. I would like to see an example.

Maybe I am missing something here... and, if so, I apologize in advance.

Thank you.
Kell
