Default KDE4 power management

Installed 5.5 a few days ago, now all patched up to stable and installed KDE4. I have the ports tree, but so far have installed all pre built packages (via pkg_add).

(I gave up on KDM, can start it from a shell and it works, but it crashes when started at boot via /etc/rc.conf.local and /etc/rc.local)

The only pressing problem I have at the moment is power management this fails on startup with the following in .xsession-errors:

Code:
kded(4144) PowerDevil::BackendLoader::loadBackend: Loading HAL backend...
kded(4144) PowerDevil::BackendLoader::loadBackend: Failed!
kded(4144): KDE Power Management System init failed!
At this point: clueless as to how to proceed so any help appreciated.

(also looked at apmd and read the manual, but not sure if it should be just added as a service or not?)

Looking at the ports@ archives, there was mention of KDE power management back in April:

http://marc.info/?l=openbsd-ports&w=...=KDE+power&q=b

However, in searching through the ports-changes@ archives, I don't see any check-in's on this topic, but I may have missed it. In any event, any check-in's made after mid-February did not make it into OpenBSD 5.5.

As for directions to take from here, you could install -current & test, but I would more strongly suggest posting as much information as you can provide (including dmesg(8) output...) to the ports@ mailing list. Information on subscribing & posting can be found at the following:

http://www.openbsd.org/mail.html

I don't recall many regulars here mentioning they use KDE (I don't either...) and/or take advantage of all of its bells & whistles, so posting to ports@ seems to be a justifiable & prudent action.

Many thanks for the info.

However, it looks like I don't have upower installed - I'll install that first and see what happens.

Thanks again

Well that made no difference - so I went for the simplest solution and disabled the KDE Power Manager...

I only really need screen blanking (which is handled by DPMS anyway).

With regard to KDE4, I also completely disabled kmix as it seems to require an alsa or pulseaudio back end.

I managed to get KDM working using this method:
