system resources
while I'm here today I have some general questions about how openbsd handles system resources.
I ask this because when I play a cd with cdio the music often halts for a moment (I guess while reading the disk), is this because my cd drive is not fast enough? (I have openbsd 4.3 on a macmini ppc g4 1.25mgz with 1g of ram). Also, mplayer complains about my system being to slow for playing dvds and if I play a movie file it sometimes slows down. I remember also postgres complaining about not having enough resources, but I think that was when I only had 256m of ram. I recently increased the number of processes allowed per user, and it goes a bit better. In a word, what else can I do to avoid these problems? Or is it just that I have a slow machine? |

the -cache option helps with files, but with real dvds xine seems to behave much better

First of all, I would update to 4.4 ASAP, but that's just a personal opinion.
As for cdio(1) playback issues, it could be many things..
That command uses no resources, cdplay digitally extracts tracks.. this does take time and resources. As for DVD's, I also recommend Ogle.. unfortunately, it doesn't always work.. and it cannot deinterlace video. Hope it helps. |

in fact I use "cdplay", but that's because I could never make "play" to work, it just stops without even starting to play.

The only other options are..
(That won't be necessary in 4.5, was bumped recently.) |

Thanks, I know about cdrip, I think I shall go with that. Otherwise, what other players do you recommend? Xmms doesn't seem to be able to directly play cds, or am I wrong?
My kern.shminfo.shmmax is already as high as 50331648, otherwise postgres wouldn't initdb. |
