Default xmms and audacious - can't add to playlist

I have installed 4.4. I think xmms was installed be default. Anyway it is definitely installed now. I have set up sound with:

# mixerctl -a > /etc/mixerctl.conf

and turned off the necessary mute lines. This worked because:

$ mpg321 gd80-09-02-sbd-sailor-saint.mp3

plays this mp3 just fine.

However, I can't add this file to the playlist window in either xmms or audacious. I have tried renaming it to a shorter file name, checked that I own it, and tried more liberal permissions (changing 644 to 777). None of that helped. What am I missing?

thanks,

Steve
