Default X Server 1.8 with new configuration mechanisms

From http://www.h-online.com/open/news/it...ms-970683.html

Quote:
Intel employee and X veteran Keith Packard has recently released version 1.8.0 of X.org's X Server. Like all versions of X Server released in the past few years, the new version usually auto-configures a system's graphics hardware and input devices, which allows it to function without any configuration file at all on many systems.

If manual configuration does become necessary, however, the new X Server can now assemble the configuration from individual files stored in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/; this is designed to offer a more flexible and less error-prone configuration procedure to distributors, third-party driver vendors and users.

The changes in release practices sounds nice. At this rate of change, I think we're going to see version 2.0 sooner then would've been expected 2 or 3 years ago lol.

Yeah, but DeviceKIT is coming all the way, it will now use udev for that.

The new version detects and implements input devices under Linux directly via udev.
... also, I have used X11 without HAL shit for quite a long time, so its removal does not mean anything for me

Linux is not UNIX! Face it! It is not an insult. It is fact: GNU is a recursive acronym for “GNU's Not UNIX”.

Well, but at least there is already a BSD-port of devicekit ;-)

So this particular point in time is "the end"?

In German "am Ende" stands for, usually after considering some arguments, or in this case some events, a final conclusion or outcome.

I may be wrong but I suspect that this is what Oliver meant, not an end of a time frame

Yeah, people use that as a statement of finality.. or a predicted finality.

Yes, exactly it's similar to "finally".
