Default Chrome stops declaring Linux systems obsolete

From http://h-online.com/-1803451

Quote:
Badly chosen warning messages caused some consternation with Google recently as its Chrome browser began declaring supported Linux systems such as Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 obsolete. The problem was brought to public attention by Red Hat evangelist Jan Wildeboer in a Google+ posting when his browser announced "Google Chrome is no longer updating because your operating system is obsolete".

I installed Chromium in OpenBSD 5.2 a few days ago and haven't gotten any annoying messages.

From the article:
Quote:
In the ensuing investigations, François Beaufort noted that the Chrome source code revealed more details about how Google worked out whether an operating system was supported – by checking the version of GTK installed. If an operating system had a GTK version earlier than 2.24, such as RHEL 6's 2.18, and Ubuntu Lucid 10.04 LTS and Debian 6's 2.20, then the system was marked as deprecated. It appears that the Google engineers had decided to use the GTK version as a proxy for the operating system version.
From the list of packages for OpenBSD 5.2
Quote:
[ ] gtk+-1.2.10p10.tgz 24-Aug-2012 05:50 1.8M
[ ] gtk+2-2.24.11.tgz 16-Aug-2012 13:58 12.3M
[ ] gtk+2-cups-2.24.11.tgz 16-Aug-2012 14:01 44k
[ ] gtk+2-docs-2.24.11.tgz 16-Aug-2012 13:59 2.5M
[ ] gtk+3-3.4.4.tgz 18-Aug-2012 04:32 12.4M
From an OpenBSD standpoint this will be an issue for the maintainer of the chromium binary and ports build scripts.

Please keep in mind that this all is about the (semi-)automatic updating mechanism that Chrome uses.

If you start Chrome under Linux and when there is an newer version, it will notify you and tell you to upgrade.
At this moment it will only display that you there is an update but will not guide you through the automatic update procedure because your Linux version, i.e GTK version is, too old or obsolete.
