Default Skype not working in FreeBSD 7.1

Hi there,

I'm new in this forum and quite new with BSD.
At the moment, I can't get skype-2.0.0.72,1 working.

I have FreeBSD 7.1-RELEASE #0: Thu Jan 1 14:37:25 UTC 2009 root@logan.cse.buffalo.edu:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/GENERIC i386;
with KDE 3.5.10 on Intel D845PESV, P4 2.4 GHz

First I just tried to compile skype from ports assuming it would pull in the dependencies, including linux_base. It did, but it took linux_base-fc4 which uses linux kernel 2.4, and skype 2 needs 2.6.

So I removed both skype and linux_base-fc4, installed linux_base-f8 and reinstalled skype as explained here:
http://const-cast.blogspot.com/2008/...n-freebsd.html

Nothing changed. Skype just doesn't start. truss shows these error messages:

open("/etc/libmap.conf",O_RDONLY,0666) ERR#2 'No such file or directory'
readlink("/etc/malloc.conf",0xbfbfdfe7,1024) ERR#2 'No such file or directory'
stat("/var/mail/root",0xbfbfebb8) ERR#2 'No such file or directory'

Any suggestions?
Thanx in advance...

I would recommend using net/skype12, you will need to uncomment the IGNORE line.

You mean "IGNORE= Legacy version, Use net/skype" line in the net/skype12/Makefile? It's not commented.

Oops, I meant comment out instead of uncomment.

That line should not be there anyway ..

I have skype-2.0.0.72,1 + linux_base-fc8 installed on FreeBSD 7.1 system - everything is working fine.

Make sure you read /usr/ports/UPDATING - entry 20080318

AFFECTS: users of linux Fedora 8 infrastructure ports
AUTHOR: bsam@FreeBSD.org

ATTENTION! Those ports are not default for any version of FreeBSD for now
and may be used with FreeBSD versions 7.2 and above (8-CURRENT is better)
using compat.linux.osrelease=2.6.16 and linux_base-f8. Please, note that
2.6.16 is not fully supported on 7.x (ex., some syscalls are missing
and cannot be MFCed due to a native FreeBSD ABI breakage).
... from /usr/ports/UPDATING

So it should be okay most of the time, but don't cry if something breaks.

Maybe it has improved a lot very recently, but when I tried f8 nearly all of my linux programs did not work. When I reverted they worked fine again. So YMMV.

>but when I tried f8 nearly all of my linux programs did not work

Two reasons:

-now it's complete (fc8)
-compat.linux.osrelease=2.6.16 isn't fully supported in 7.2 but necessary for fc8

So as I said, it can be okay (using Flash10 at the moment) but it mustn't

Well, I don't follow all the semantics, but it is still listed as f8. It has undoubtedly improved, but my luck a month ago wasn't very good. I did notice the issues with 7.x; I intended to move over once 8.0 hits.
