Default On International Woman's Day we remember Grace Hopper

From http://www.theregister.co.uk/2013/03..._grace_hopper/

Quote:
Once again some of the world is celebrating International Woman's Day (IWD), and it's time to reflect on great female role models. Ada Lovelace usually grabs most of the attention but I'd like to use IWD as an excuse to pay a tribute to a personal female hero of computing: US Rear Admiral Grace Hopper.

Amazing Grace was in at the start of the modern computing revolution and dedicated her life to making computers more distributed, easier to use, and more efficient. She invented the first code compiler, was pivotal in the development of COBOL, popularized the term "bug", and was so good at what she did that the US Navy couldn't let her go – recalling her twice to duty before old age did her for good.

Collection of sayings from Grace Hopper:

These sayings are taken from an article from the OCLC NEWSLETTER,
March/April, 1987, No. 167.
Editor (and article author) Philip Schieber.

Life was simple before World War II. After that, we had systems.

On the building of Bigger Computers:

In pioneer days they used oxen for heavy pulling, and
when one ox couldn't budge a log, they didn't try to grow a larger ox.
We shouldn't be trying for bigger computers, but for more systems of
computers.

On Change:

Humans are allergic to change.
They love to say, "We've always done it this way."
I try to fight that.
That's why I have a clock on my wall that runs counter-clockwise.

On calculating the value of information:

A business' accounts receivable file is much more important than its
accounts payable file.

On information and knowledge:

We're flooding people with information.
We need to feed it through a processor.
A human must turn information into intelligence or knowledge.
We've tended to forget that no computer will ever ask a new question.

On advice to the young (whom she defines as "anybody half my age"):

You manage things, you lead people.
We went overboard on management and forgot about leadership.
It might help if we ran the MBAs out of Washington.

I remember watching a documentary on the BBC some years ago and apparently in the early days of computing the big boys designing computers felt that programming was a lowly typist's job not worthy of their grand attention.
So, secretaries and such got `stuck' with this `mundane job', and the first generation of programmers was predominately female...

... This soon changed as we all know ...
