Default Repeating BSDforums’ problems… even worse

Hi people!

You seem to be repeating the problems of BSDforums:
Code:
   [78]Other BSD

DragonflyBSD, PC-BSD, PicoBSD, MidnightBSD, BSDI, DesktopBSD etc.
Why isn’t MirBSD, started in 2002, listed? Do you people
_still_ think of it as no first-class citizen, after about
3300 or more downloads of the MirBSD #10 release ISO, all
the success at conferences, etc?

Is it because we, as the only BSD, come from the old continent?

Furthermore: it’s impossible to finish the registration pro-
cess with Lynx, even with the Audio form of the ReCaptcha,
and in Links+ (links -g), it doesn’t even show. There is a
so simple solution, employed by undeadly.org (the OpenBSD
magazine) – using Figlet captchas.

Maybe offer both, where the user has to fill in only one to
register? I mean, hey, it can’t be _that_ hard, can it?

This reminds me a lot of "My distro owns your distro" discussions (If you can call 'em that) common on discussion boards related to a certain other OS...

I'm aware of the issues with the CAPTCHA, the possibility of removing the CAPTCHA is being discussed.

Notice the etc? That's to cover all the other variants of BSD. There are several not listed. MirBSD wasn't singled out. Note how NanoBSD and MiniBSD aren't there either. Quite a few aren't listed. Hence the etc.

Why get so worked up over something so small?

Nah, it’s not like that. It’s just that other, much younger BSDs,
such as DragonFly and (I’m happy they were remembered because I’m
quite a lot talking with them) MidnightBSD, were mentioned, while
MirBSD was forgotten “as usual”.

Look at it like this: if there were a site listing BSD resources,
all but your forum, wouldn’t you be surprised as well? Add to that
that MirBSD goes into its sixth year now.

I fully well know MirBSD isn’t the optimal tool for many jobs – but
it definitively is for some. And as a BSD it should not be forgotten
on a site about the BSDs. FWIW, allbsd.de and allbsd.org both co-
operate with us too.

(Side note: our MirPorts Framework works on MidnightBSD too…)

You call 3300+ downloads of the release ISOs and handing out several(!)
hundred CDs each conference *SMALL*?

Plus: I get worked up over it because it’s my baby.

Well, don't get worked up. You only make yourself sound silly.

I thought the message was a joke (or a troll) when I read it. (Maybe it is, and I'm feeding it - if so, sorry!). Now it seems like you are serious.
3300 downloads is vanishingly small, and, while your effort at handing out cds is commendable, mere hundreds aren't going to make much difference.

Try again when you are distributing thousands of cds, and when you need help mirroring for your 100,000 downloads.

Where exactly do DragonFly (note the spelling…),
MidnightBSD or the long gone BSDi BSD/OS (note
the spelling) fit these requirements?

Well, DesktopBSD beats us, and I have no idea
about PC-BSD… but then, PicoBSD is a special-
purpose one, not a generic one like the others.

Besides, I don’t need any help mirroring yet ☺
I have enough ressources, and an offer from gwdg
I could use if I needed it.

I listed the first few BSD OS's that came to mind, obviously we can't possibly list all of them ... It is obvious that everything that is BSD, but not Free-, Open-, or NetBSD, should go here.
Arguing which of the example should be in the list is just bikeshed painting...

Not being an admin/moderator on this forum, I can only speculate or quote their reasonings... but personally, I don't think anything keeps you from posting about any flavor of BSD here. Are your posts about MIRBSD disappearing or something?

Whether or not a particular BSD gets it's own section, however, is a horse of another color. I think it would be difficult to argue that the BSD's other than Net, Free, and Open rise to the level of popularity, use, or ubiquity that these three are at.

To be certain, I think that posting about issues and progress with your particular BSD does more justice to it than merely arguing that it needs it's own section, especially based on the number of posts in the past related to it. In short, your complaints don't really seem to be persuasive. In fact, your complaints about exposure seem to be the only posts you have here in this forum... hmmm.

But again, I'm not even on the totem pole here, much less high up on it. So perhaps I'm speaking out of turn, but that's my perspective.

The part about “anything else” belonging there was clear,
however I still think that, if you list them, you should
list all of the major smaller BSDs, which includes MirBSD
since 2004 or so. (Before it was really small.)

It shouldn’t be too much effort to change DragonflyBSD
into DragonFly BSD, BSDI to BSD/OS, and add MirOS BSD.

I certainly never requested a section of its own, I’m fully fine
with it belonging to the “Other BSDs” section, considering the
amount of user feedback I get in general (related to the amount
of media given out or downloaded).

I merely want MirBSD, as the eldest of the bigger “other” BSDs,
to be mentioned in the sub-forum heading.

I agree.

It ain't that _big_ a deal, the forum section is 'Other BSD' which means every thing that ain't the biggest 3 and the examples show there are a few.

I consider that short of replacing 'OtherBSD' with a 'DragonflyBSD' section. That the current situation shows that this boards administrators know and respect that there are more then the Free, Net, and Open BSD OSes that people in the community may need help with.

Just my 0b10 cents.

Well, the way this conversation is going, the only way to fix this would be to remove the mention of everything underneath the forum heading, and replace it with "Every other BSD variant." Otherwise there will be people from NanoBSD complaining they aren't mentioned, and people from XBSD, and people from YBSD, and so on.

After all, if you're going to make such a big stink about something so small as this, who knows what the NanoBSD people will do. Better to just nip it in the bud.
