Default Video chipset supported, but Xserver exits with errors related to screen

Greetings all,

I gave my laptop with OpenBSD to a relative, but since then I have acquired a new laptop, unfortunately with Nvidia card. However, the card is based on a chip (NVS 3100M) that is reported by the "nv" driver as supported. Consequently, having detected the chip, the Xserver is trying to use the "nv" driver, but exits with several screen related errors as listed in the below-reproduced "/var/log/Xorg.0.log".

Could someone review the log file to ascertain that I am not overlooking anything?

Kindest regards,

M

1. You've posted in the FreeBSD section. An admin may be able to move this thread.

2. With NVIDIA hardware, expect that only the VESA driver will function. To configure X.org so that it uses the vesa(4) driver, create an xorg.conf(5) fragment file in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ that selects it, such as:
Code:
Section "Device"
    Identifier "default device"
    Driver "vesa"
EndSection

Hi jggimi,

Yes, I know that explicitly crating the section for vesa driver works. I was just wondering, whether I have not overlooked something, especially since the chip is clearly listed as supported, including the OpenBSD man page.

I have created the fragment in /etc/X11/ instead of your recommended /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/. Is there a difference?

Kindest regards,

N

The man page is from X.org.

There's no operational difference if you only have a single configuration fragment.
