Default Using UEFI Laptops with Windows 8 Pre-installed

Greetings, Gentlemen:

I've a relatively new Toshiba Win8 (Pre-installed from OEM) Laptop for work issued to me; and was trying to install OpenBSD on an USB Stick to try it out.

Turns out that there's that "UEFI" issue to deal with...
http://www.daemonforums.org/showthre...highlight=uefi

From what I've read, disabling the "Secure Boot" mode should have allowed the Laptop to boot from the ordered drives (I've set the CD/DVD Drive).

It's not working - so I'm obviously missing something.

Can the lucky hacks who tried this over the Holidays give me some pointers, please?

Thank you,

My wife's gaming rig is new enough to have the UEFI crap in it, and it took me a bit to figure out how to turn off the secure boot (rather, ENABLE legacy boot). I (obviously) can't give step by step instructions, but I can say that in my case it took 2-3 knobs being turned before it allowed me to pxeboot from a non-uefi image.

Just faced the same issue a couple of weeks ago ... the image systems kinda, .. ok really sucks .. but turn on legacy boot, then that will let you change the boot order to check for the usb stick first.. IDK why, but it took a few times and a couple or reboots to get it to stick.. (kind of reminds me of PnP) :O (can also try a "load bios defaults")

just a note tho, make sure you use the restore to create a w8 recovery disk just in case anything goes south. heh

I recently purchased an HP p2-1394 desktop and it has UEFI and even though I have enabled legacy boot and changed a couple of other things, I still have to press F9 to select the boot device. Even cleared the keys, etc.

Default More Details

Greetings, Folks.

I found out that several makers have the "Secure Boot" Functions in their UEFI/BIOS that locks other OSs from being installed.

I understand Ubuntu has a UEFI Compatible Installation Option. OBSD doesn't IIRC.

Disabling the Secure Boot Function on the UEFI/BIOS should allow users to change their Boot Options from UEFI to Legacy(CFM) Boot.

As of this posting, it should work; BUT - for me, I've a new processor which prevents the OS from Booting, so I'll have to post another thread for that.

Thanks!
