No dice.

freeBSD i386 is little more than useless. i386 as a platform has a limited life, and is being swallowed up by amd64. The only reason to stick to i386 _now_ is compatibility with nvidia and flash binaries. We really do not want to preserve that any longer than it is now. The 4G memory limit is beginning to get in the road of things as it is.

What we _do_ want is for adobe to support the gnash project, and produce a fully-functional, open source flash that we can port and compile on whatever platform we desire.

Flash for Tamagotchi FTW.

Presumably if this happens the way they are talking about it on the newsgroups :

This could bode well for PC-BSD and FreeBSD should someone step up to
do this work.
Then who ever did the port should be able to look at 64-bit versions too? And really until Nvidia or AMD/ATI release some solid 64-bit drivers I doubt many will leave i386/32-bit for desktop/workstations.

Honestly as much as I dislike Flash, it does have its uses, it would be nice to be able to jump on youtube occasionally or listen to a bands streaming songs on myspace without having to fire up wine and hoping that it won't crash.

Such a petition doesn't work. There are a lot of them and nothing happens.
Watch out for mails on freebsd-advocacy@. People like Matt Olander are already in contact with Adobe.

Yotube plays fine in FreeBSD-7.0 using linux-opera with linux-flashplugin.

But many (most?) sites use flash8 or 9, and refuse to play.

Adobe may not come out and say that 'we made a freebsd flash plugin because of the petition,' but every bit of social activism helps. Every action creates more pressure which contributes to the cumulative effort.

Adobe certainly wouldn't come out and make a FreeBSD flash plugin if absolutely no one had ever mentioned the idea to them; they'd realize the need doesn't exist and would be a waste of time and money.

That's true but a petition with less than 10.000 signatures in years is not very effective. The first entries mention FreeBSD 5.2.1 now thats what I call a slightly old petition. I wonder if anyone called Adobes attention to this specific website.
IMHO the best way is to contact the company directly like Matt did.

Signed. Why not after all? I'm not disturbed by the lack of decent flash support in FreeBSD. I tried gnash (which was very unstable) and swfdec (which was slightly better). I think it's a matter of time. Both those projects are evolving rapidly.

I think petitioning for retarded webdevelopers to remove flash crap from their sites would be a better idea.

Carpetsmoker has the right idea ;-)

Although I'd rather use a sledge hammer then a petition with some of the sites I've seen...

I'd use this Sledge Hammer:

Yeah, more flash ...

I am now on a flash site (Windows machine) with music which I cannot turn off ?!?!
I am playing a game (With sound) in windowed mode ... Nice, thank you Mr. adobe and Mr. Webmaster, you are much more wise than I am, and YOU and not I should decide whether or not I want webpages to play sound..

This is even worse than installers with music you can't turn off!

AARRRRGGHH!

well i'm also a web developer and even i don't like flash it's becoming present in all web sites, many things that are done in flash many of them can be achieved by using js, but still many people intend to use it... So why not put it under **BSD, i hate to admit it but it's growing very quickly, i haven't like how the programmers grow in knowledge using each day more and more system resources, i still remember the days when people do things for the hardware that all people have and not what the people should have, but that's part of the process of evolving...
