Question OpenBDS 5.5 Problems with network interface during installation.

Hello,

During installation I had problems with the network interface.

"Network interfaces: athn0, msk0, vlan0"

I knew the correct option should be athn0 so after picking and asking for a list of connections I found my wi-fi. Picked the security password WPA (P)SK, but then while trying to connect what I get was this:

athn0 radio switch turned off

I tried msk0 but also didn't work.

Yes I have DHCP.
Should I change anything about the configuration of my router on their website (OvisLink Wireless N BroadBand Router Evo-W301AR) ?

Thank you. Just learning about OpenBSD.

athn0 is the one you need to configure. That would be an Atheros wifi adapter using athn driver.

msk0 is probably an ethernet controller.

The radio for the device is off - this usually means a hardware killswitch. If the system is a laptop have a look for a button to enable the wifi.

You may also need firmware for athn(4). It would be helpful if you could post the output of dmesg.

Quote:
DIAGNOSTICS
athn0: device timeout A frame dispatched to the hardware for
transmission did not complete in time. The driver will reset the
hardware. This should not happen.

athn0: radio is disabled by hardware switch The radio transmitter is off
and thus no packet can go out. The driver will reset the hardware. Make
sure the laptop radio switch is on.

athn0: radio switch turned off The radio switch has been turned off
while the interface was up and running. The driver will turn the
interface down.

athn0: error N, could not read firmware ... For some reason, the driver
was unable to read the firmware file from the filesystem. The file might
be missing or corrupted.

Wifi button has been always enabled.

Maybe after the installation, I can install the firmware and finish the if configuration?

The dmesg above looks to be from a Linux system. In Linux the device is recognized as an ath driver while OpenBSD distinguises between ath and athn. See the FAQ on wireless networking. OpenBSD's dmesg will let you know if there are any firmware issues, the athn chipset/radio and the interface.

As long as you have the install image, you can continue the installation without setting up the network. If you have access to an ethernet port and cable you can also initially have the installation set up a wired ethernet connection and if firmware is needed, then download it.

OpenBSD will also generate a dmesg output that can be copied to a usb thumb drive. Here is a FAQ entry on mounting USB drives for OpenBSD.

Hello, and welcome!

Your Atheros WiFi is an AR9285, according to your Linux dmesg. This device is among those managed by the athn(4) driver, as you surmised. The athn NICs require third party firmware, as described in the man page under FILES.

Yes, see fw_update(1).

Two additional points:
  • In general, supplying the dmesg(8) output from other operating systems is of minimal use. dmesg output shows the kernel's understanding of what hardware is detected. How Linux detects hardware & how OpenBSD detects hardware are two different interpretations.
  • If you continue to experience problems after installing newer firmware, you may want to consider installing a snapshot of -current which will contain any fixes or changes made since OpenBSD 5.5 (which was tagged nearly six months ago...). In fact, snapshots obtained today will be past OpenBSD 5.6 which is currently scheduled to be released 1 November 2014.
