Default NetBSD 5.1 Installation issues

Hello!

I am trying to install NetBSD 5.1 and I'm having some issues:

Boot Option 1: Install
----------------------

I get to install until the end with sysinst.
After installation I reboot and start to configure X.
When I do # X -configure, the screen is filled with random characters and hangs.

Boot Option 2: Install with no ACPI option.
-------------------------------------------

2.1 The system gives the following boot messages:

Code:
...
cpu0: erratum 89 present
cpu0: WARNING: errata present, BIOS upgrade
cpu0: WARNING necessary to ensure reliable operation
panic: unknown MPS interrupt trigger
fatal breakpoint trapin supervisor mode
trap type 1 code 0 eip c057a54c cs 8 eflags 246 cr2 ilevel 8
Stopped in pid 0.1 (system) at netbsd:breakpoint +0x4: popl %ebp
2.2 The system prompts with
...
db{0}>

Boot Option 3 - Install with no ACPI, no SMP
----------------------------------------------
The system boots from installation CD, presents the sysinst welcome screen and hangs.

The BIOS installed is version F.54, which is the latest available from support.

Is there a way to provide more detail, using dmesg or log files?

Thanks in advance.

P.S The machine being used is described at http://www.daemonforums.org/showthre...1882#post34048

You may not need to run X -configure with the newer versions of Xorg. If this is the NetBSD instructions you are using, they are dated
http://www.netbsd.org/docs/guide/en/...-configuration
Try just 'startx' out of option 1.

Hello,

I tried startx command right from a user privileged console; as a result, the screen blanks with a cursor on the top left corner and the system hangs.

I guess I'll wait for the next stable release, while using NetBSD 5.02 in the meantime; the problem is that version NetBSD version 5.0.2 supports only GNU/Linux openSuse version 10.0,which is a bit dated - the current stable version of openSuse is 11.3.

Best regards.

Hello!

Is it possible to get X server log information, in order to understand what is the cause for the failure in $ startx, considering the system hangs after startx and the X log is lost when the system reboots?

Is there a way to to get the X server log to persist between system boots?

Thanks in advance.

It is usually in /etc/log/Xorg.0.log. One my non-NetBSD machines at least 2 sequential copies are maintained and it should be immediately accessible after a failed startx.

Mine are in /var/log/Xorg.0.log (That is for base system X, not modular, if it matters (probably not).)

That was probably just a typo on his part.

Typo is a nice way to put it. Brain Fart was more correct.
