Default Why aren't you using FreeBSD?

From http://www.infoworld.com/d/data-cent...freebsd-178119

Here I sit, watching a freshly installed FreeBSD box run through cvsup on all ports, to be closely followed by a new kernel compilation. As the output flies by in the xterm, I find myself wondering why I don't run into more FreeBSD in the world.

I've tried it myself in the last couple of weeks. For the first time. Unfortunately, my netbook's Atheros NIC is incorrectly managed in 8.2 and is effectively nonfunctional; in 9.0 it works fine but hald and dbus combined fail to find either my keyboard or mouse.

I may patch 8.2 with the Atheros fix from 9, or I may wait for 9's revamped X management to settle in and get these little device recognition glitches resolved.

I don't run it nearly as often as I used to because it's just not that good as a desktop... I get graphical corruption with my HD4350, HD3450 and HD4850, all of which work great with the open source driver in Linux. If I restart X on one of those machines, the entire system locks up, without any debugging information.

I don't use FreeBSD because I use OpenBSD =P

On a more serious note, I last tried FreeBSD around the 6.x/7.x timeframe, and the installer was...quirky? Once I tried the OpenBSD installer and got past the initial learning curve of OpenBSD, I never really looked back.

I used FreeBSD 6.x through 8.x as my primary system and development platform, only yielding it to Linux when I came into need of an incompatible x86 Linux blob. At present, because Android does all I need, and most things I care about either have Android apps or will compile on Linux ARM.
