Default bad display name in DHCP

This is more for information gathering than help. (Although I probably do need help.)

I reinstalled the system yesterday and it worked fine until rebooted this morning. I took a couple photographs of the screen to get a record of the error messages, but they are to large to post on the board. Loading a GUI was not possible because connection to xserver was refused, no drivers available and no screens found. I reinstalled again using a CD. Everything went smoothly and is working perfectly, except for a message I get when I log out of a GUI:
Code:
xauth: (argv):1: bad display name "randicus.DHCP.0" in "remove" command
There are no problems connecting to the internet, so it seems to only affect GUIs. Of course, the easiest way to test it is to reboot, but I am afraid to do that.

Could this be related to the "hostname" or "full name of user" created during installation? I ask because I have no idea how xorg and xserver are related to DHCP. I have installed OpenBSD several times on two computers, including this one, and have never had so much difficulty before. I do not know if it will help, but this my dmeg:

Hopefully I shall still have a GUI after rebooting and can ignore that DHCP error message, but even so, I would like to know if I am making a mistake during installation. For hostname I enter my user name. For full name of user, in the past I used a three-name full name. This time I used the same single name for hostname and full name. Do such things have effect on the system? I am inclined to think not since the internet connection is working fine, but I am too far out of my element to be even remotely sure of anything.

Edit
i3status says there is no internet connection. So that may be related to my question, but probably not.

First, resolve any local DNS issues. Check your /etc/myname contents. This should be a resolvable, fully qualified domain name. If your domain is personal and not resolvable via your DNS nameservers, the name must be resolvable via provisioning your hosts(5) file and your resolv.conf(5) must include a lookup that includes "file". I have an /etc/resolv.conf.tail that contains "lookup file bind" so that my resolver will always look at my /etc/hosts file before reaching out to a nameserver.

Second, you appear to be missing graphics firmware. Once you establish an internet connection, run # fw_update.

/etc/myname
Code:
randicus.DHCP
Perhaps .org should be before .DHCP?

resolve.conf looks fine. It has two nameservers and "lookup file bind."

Is randicus.DHCP in your /etc/hosts file? You should confirm it is resolving correctly to 127.0.0.1 with $ ping -c 1 randicus.DHCP

I suspect the ".DHCP" string got into /etc/myname by mistake, perhaps by user error at install time? The file should contain the fully qualified domain name of the system.

DHCP is not in /etc/hosts, but is in /etc/myname. Cannot ping it.

Yes could and probably was an error during installation. It has been at least two years since the last time I installed a system and probably messed up. I distinctly remember naming my systems with name.org in the past, but this time I forgot about that and left out the .org. DHCP must have been put there by the installer. I am going to edit the file by replacing DHCP with ,org and see what happens.

And here I am, thinking that you intended your local domain to be ".DHCP" for a personal reason.

It's easy to make these kinds of slip-ups, or get confused about which installer question has what defaults, especially after a while of not doing it.

Using an existing top-level domain like .org is probably not a good idea. On the one hand, as long as you remember to put your own hosts into the /etc/hosts file, and use it first for lookups, you will be able to reach them. But, if there is a real Internet domain under .org with the same name as one of your hosts, you won't be able to look it up properly, because your resolver will return the IP address of the host on your LAN instead of the real one. While this may be an unlikely naming overlap, it really should not be done that way. It's better to chose some bogus non-existent top level domain for your network, so that there can be no conflict. I use .lan, but there may be better choices. I'm not sure what is the latest best practice about such reserved names for private usage.

Not an unreasonable assumption given we are often an eclectic bunch.

".local" is commonly used, and it is reserved for local use by ICANN/IANA. But ".local" will interfere with Apple's multicasting DNS, should you have the avahi_daemon running (from the avahi package).

In my lab virtual machines, I use ".lab" though RFC 2606 tells me I should use ".test" instead.

Outside the lab, all my systems use my second level domain, whether they are private or public facing. I pay for it, so I might as well use it. If I didn't have it, I'd just use .local.

Thanks for the reference to RFC 2606, that's a nice short read!

There was also some forum discussion about this question in this thread. In that thread I linked an RFC under development. It seems that document has become RFC 6762 now, but the material in Appendix G has the status of an observation of things that worked at the time but is not really recommended as they might stop working in the future I suppose.

Thanks for the ideas. I also solved the problem of i3status not seeing the internet connection. For some reason the default i3status.conf now has ethernet em0. I changed the two entries to re0 and problem solved.

The internet was shutdown for three days while some "work" was done. So yesterday was a good day. Upon booting this morning the problem returned. I can use the TTY, but cannot load a GUI. I wrote down parts of the error message. Hopefully I chose useful parts and there are no spelling errors.

Code:
ModulePath set to "/usr/X11R6/lib/modules"
If no devices become available, reconfigure wscons or disable AutoAddDevices.

checkDevMem: failed to open /dev/xf86 and /dev/mem
    (Permission denied)
check that you have set 'machdep.allowaperture=1'
    in /etc/sysctl.conf and reboot machine
    refer to xf86 for details

linear framebuffer access unavailable
LoadModule: "glx"
Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.so
Assigned the driver to the xf86Configlayout
No drivers available.

No screens found
Before logging in this message is displayed:
Code:
xauth: (stdin):1: bad display name "randicus.org:0" in "add" command
startx results in
Code:
xinit: unable to connect to X server: Connection refused
xinit: server error
xauth: (argv):1: bad display name "randicus.org:0" in "remove" command
/etc/resolv.conf
search DHCP HOST
nameserver ... (listed address is correct)
lookup file bind

/etc/hostname.re0
DHCP

/etc/hosts
... localhost
::1 localhost

I believe those three files are correct.

Firmware update and syspatch are both up-to-date. The only other thing I can think of off the top of my head is using ~/.xinit (it is the only way I have figured out how to make startx load i3), but I doubt very much that is the problem.

At this point I do not know if I managed to completely screw up my connection configuration or if 6.4 does not like my hardware. I am strongly tempted to reinstall 6.3 and wait for 6.5 before upgrading.

Thanks for pointing my attention to the other thread. I followed jggimi's instructions:
$ ln .xinitrc .xsession
# rcctl -f start xenodm

and X is working again. Hopefully all is still fine after I make the other modifications.

This is interesting, only because of an extra keyword:

The search option of resolv.conf(5) is used as a "short name" resolver aid. Yours includes both your "DHCP" local domain, which as discussed above was deployed by accident and should be corrected. But this search list also includes a "HOST" local domain, which hasn't surfaced before in this thread, to the best of my recollection.

I wonder where "HOST" comes from? lt's academic, as your hosts(5) file only resolves localhost, so the resolver will not be able to resolve <name>.DHCP or <name>.HOST lookups.

A resolv.conf() file created through DHCP services should have a comment as its top line, such as "# Generated by re0 dhclient"

Code:

search DHCP HOST

nameserver 202.- -.- - -.- -
lookup file bind
I omitted the numbers because I assume it is bad idea to broadcast my address on the internet. I have no idea how HOST got in there, but I take it I should remove it.

The statements in resolv.conf() come from a negotiation between dhclient(8) on OpenBSD and the DHCP server on your local network. If you have no dhclient.conf(5) file in /etc, then I will guess that the "HOST" search field comes from your DHCP server, since the first domain, "DHCP," comes from your hostname set by your myname(5) file.

For clarity, here's an example from my laptop.

Short name: "x220"
Domain name: "jggimi.net" (only because I have the domain, otherwise this would have been "local")
Nameserver: 10.0.1.1 (on the local network, provided by my DHCP servers)

----

/etc/myname:
Code:
x220.jggimi.net
/etc/resolv.conf:
Code:
# Generated by rtwn0 dhclient
search jggimi.net
nameserver 10.0.1.1
lookup file bind
My /etc/resolv.conf.tail:
Code:
lookup file bind
My /etc/hosts file contains nicknames for lab machines that aren't defined in my local nameserver:
Code:
127.0.0.1 localhost
::1             localhost

100.64.1.3 i386
100.64.2.3 amd64
100.64.3.3 test
10.9.0.4 armv7
