Default disc burner not working - possibly firmware issue

I have not used my cd burner since before upgrading OpenBSD to 6.3. When I try to use it now there is a problem. Trying to burn a disc with cdrecord results in this error message:
Code:
cdrecord: Cannot allocate memory. WARNING: Cannot do mlockall(2).
cdrecord: WARNING: This causes a high risk for buffer underruns.
cdrecord: Cannot allocate memory. Cannot get mmap for 4198400 Bytes on /dev/zero.
Out of curiosity I installed k3b and it cannot detect the device. So I ran dmesg and noticed this part:
Code:

"MSFT0001" at acpi0 not configured
"SYN2B39" at acpi0 not configured

error: [drm:pid0:i915_gem_init_hw] *ERROR* Failed to initialize GuC, error -8 (ignored)
I do not know if this is the cause. If so, is my guess correct that the problem is simply a failure to install the required firmware during the last upgrade?

Everything else has worked fine since the upgrade half a year ago, so I am reluctant to jump to conclusions regarding firmware. I am too ignorant to know if the error message and dmesg output are related. All I know for certain is that cdrecord "cannot allocate memory" and k3b cannot see the device. I am assuming it is not a problem with fstab since the device is the only internal drive and did not need special mounting before.

Your memory allocation issue may be due to login class limits. The default class has low limits, while the staff class may be more appropriate to workstation use. Check your limits in Bourne-based or C-based shells with the shell's limit or ulimit command, respectively, if you are already using the staff class.

Intel's i915 graphics' loadable firmware is not used with OpenBSD. I'm not sure why you are seeing the error message in your dmesg(8). A full dmesg() and a copy of /var/log/Xorg.0.log might provide more insight.

I believe this firmware has to do with lowpower encoding modes:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php...rmware_loading.

It does not seem to be enabled in OpenBSD:
http://openbsd-archive.7691.n7.nabbl...-td333988.html

In OpenBSD, I had issues with lock-ups after hibernation on a AsRock J3355M that resolved after disabling C-states.

Everything was working fine before the upgrade to 6.3. It might be possible drivers or configuration changed, but that would be surprising. At least to me.

My knowledge of shells is very limited. I only use the default shell, which I believe is kshell. I have no idea what else the OS might use behind the scenes. I shall check out those files if I can find them.

I do not know if this Xorg.log will have useful information, because I did not try to use the cd drive today.

I ran fw_update and it said no changes. Tomorrow I might add an entry to fstab to see if that works. Although as mentioned in the OP, that has never been necessary before and the system has been through at least three upgrades since being installed.

If you don't use it very often, the electrical contacts may have got dirty, maybe try removing & replacing the drive a couple of times if it's a laptop, or the cables if it's in a desktop.

When you upgraded, did you also upgrade packages with # pkg_add -u? I ask because cdrecord is a component of the cdrtools package, it is not part of the base OS, and while older packages should still work, there can sometimes be problems due to inadvertant calls to libraries with API changes.

My knowledge of shells is very limited. I only use the default shell, which I believe is kshell. I have no idea what else the OS might use behind the scenes. I shall check out those files if I can find them.
Let me be clear. Memory and other limits are a function of the user's login class. There are several login classes, defined in /etc/login.conf, and selected when you provision a user. There are three useful classes defined in that file for admins to be aware of: default, staff, and daemon. The default class is for default users, and has minimal resources -- memory, open files, running processes -- available. The daemon class is used by running services such as those started at boot time. The staff class is for human users who expect to use the bulk of the resources on the computer. As an example of this, most browsers will fail if the user is running in the default login class. You can change a user's class from "default" to "staff" with user management tools such as chpass(1).

Limits defined by the user's class are easy to see from the user's shell, using "limit" with Bourne-based shells such as ksh(1), and with "ulimit" from C-based shells such as csh(1).

---

For additional clarity, there is absolutely no connection between your graphics chipset and cdrecord's failure. The firmware message is not related to the problem. But, since you noticed the firmware error message, here is what I can see from your dmesg(8):
Code:
OpenBSD 6.3 (GENERIC.MP) #10: Wed Aug 22 16:42:31 CEST 2018 root@syspatch-63-amd64.openbsd.org:/usr/src/sys/arch/amd64/compile/GENERIC.MP
That first line tells my you are using 6.3-release with syspatches through August 22, on the amd64 architecture. There are some newer errata patches, but they do not appear to be related in any way to your cdrecord problem or your graphics firmware error message.
Code:
bios0: vendor LENOVO version "D7CN30WW(V3.03)" date 04/18/2016
bios0: LENOVO 80LM
These two lines indicate you have a Lenovo B51-80 laptop. There is a newer BIOS available from Lenovo: V3.08, dated 04/16/2017. I do not know what's in the BIOS update, but my guess is it will include recent Intel processor security mitigations.
Code:
cpu0: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-6200U
This line indicates you have a Skylake processor. Skylake integrated graphics are a relatively recent support addition to OpenBSD. Support began with release 6.2.
Code:
inteldrm0 at pci0 dev 2 function 0 "Intel HD Graphics 520" rev 0x07
drm0 at inteldrm0
inteldrm0: msi
error: [drm:pid0:i915_firmware_load_error_print] *ERROR* failed to load firmware i915/skl_dmc_ver1.bin (-22)
error: [drm:pid0:i915_gem_init_hw] *ERROR* Failed to initialize GuC, error -8 (ignored)
inteldrm0: 1366x768, 32bpp
wsdisplay0 at inteldrm0 mux 1: console (std, vt100 emulation)
wsdisplay0: screen 1-5 added (std, vt100 emulation)
The location of these messages within the dmesg() show that the firmware error message is produced during boot, before X is started. The message indicates that Intel's GuC -- a parallel workload scheduler -- will not be enabled without Intel's firmware.
Code:
cd0 at scsibus1 targ 1 lun 0: <HL-DT-ST, DVDRAM GUE0N, T.02> ATAPI 5/cdrom removable
The OS discovered your optical drive, a CD/DVD/DVD-RAM device. Are you able to use the drive with tools included with the OS, such as playing or burning CDs with cdio(1)? That would indicate if your cdrecord problem is due to the utility, and not to something else. The Multimedia section of the OpenBSD FAQ should be helpful for CDs and DVDs.
Code:
1:0:0: mem address conflict 0xfffe0000/0x20000
"ATI Radeon HD 8670M" rev 0x83 at pci1 dev 0 function 0 not configured
It appears your laptop has "hybrid" graphics - both Intel and Radeon. The Radeon device is not available due to internal addressing conflicts. Generally, OpenBSD only functions well on systems with "hybrid" graphics when one of the two graphics chipsets are disabled in BIOS.
Code:
error: [drm:pid60259:intel_pipe_update_start] *ERROR* Potential atomic update failure on pipe A
error: [drm:pid60259:intel_pipe_update_start] *ERROR* Potential atomic update failure on pipe A
error: [drm:pid60259:intel_pipe_update_start] *ERROR* Potential atomic update failure on pipe A
These messages also appear during the boot up phase. These error message conditions were added to drm(4) kernel support at 6.2, as part of the support added for Skylake. They are produced when hardware is not behaving as the drm() driver expects. It is unclear to me what the cause might be. Disabling the Radeon hardware in BIOS might eliminate them.

Your Xorg log indicates that X is using the default modesetting(4) driver with drm(4).

There seem to be multiple issues.

1) If your cd burner has an sata interface, I do not see that a second sata device in your dmesg

2) Two Video devices:
Code:
inteldrm0 at pci0 dev 2 function 0 "Intel HD Graphics 520" rev 0x07
drm0 at inteldrm0
inteldrm0: msi
error: [drm:pid0:i915_firmware_load_error_print] *ERROR* failed to load firmware i915/skl_dmc_ver1.bin (-22)
error: [drm:pid0:i915_gem_init_hw] *ERROR* Failed to initialize GuC, error -8 (ignored)
inteldrm0: 1366x768, 32bpp
and

Code:
1:0:0: mem address conflict 0xfffe0000/0x20000
"ATI Radeon HD 8670M" rev 0x83 at pci1 dev 0 function 0 not configured
To address the OP, I would double check the cd burner cable connections, and get into the bios to see if the cd burner is recognized. Or are you using an external cd burner?

Off topic but the referenced in the firmware concern. You appear to have hybrid Intel/Radeon graphics The intel graphics should work but will not provide the powersaving feature. The Radeon HD 8670M should be supported, with appropriate firmware, in 6.4.

sd0 is on the same bus. Here's a dmassage tree excerpt from the dmesg():
Code:
 | \-pci0
 | |-ahci0
 | | \-scsibus1
 | | |-cd0
 | | \-sd0

Sorry, I missed the cd0. One quick way to check for cdrecord problems is to use an alternative cd burner:
cdio(1). After some 6.3 syspatches, I found that I needed to provide the full path to the *.iso file.

I recommended cdio() above. But it's easy to miss in that monstrous posting.

cdrecord: Cannot allocate memory. Cannot get mmap for 4198400 Bytes on /dev/zero.
Rebooting and using cdrecord before doing anything else fixes this here. Same with growisofs.

I use this approach routinely, but haven't had time to investigate why it happens.

Thanks for the information. It adds to my snail's pace of learning.

cdrecord -scanbus:
Code:
Cdrecord-ProDVD-ProBD-Clone 3.00 (amd64-unknown-openbsd6.3) Copyright (C) 1995-2010 Jrg Schilling
cdrecord: No such file or directory. Cannot open or use SCSI driver.
I hope I do not need to download a new driver. Everything used to perfectly.

@sacerdos_daemonis did you try again after rebooting?

Just finished the experiment. Rebooting does not help.
Code:
scsibus: -2 target" -2 lun -2No such file or directory. Cannot open 'cd0c'. Cannot open or use SCSI driver.
The same using rcd0c.
Code:
egrep "^cd.+ at scsibus" /var/run/dmesg.boot
from share/doc/cdrtools/README.OpenBSD. shows the device to be rcd0, but using cd and rcd yield the same result.

I am off to bed.

What is the exact command you are using with cdrecord? The device should be /dev/rcd0c

What do you get when you use cdio(1) per the OpenBSD FAQ?

I'm just getting up
https://linux.die.net/man/1/growisofs from sysutils/dvd+rw-tools uses the cdrecord tool chain. growisofs has an OpenBSD specific section on naming devices:
Quote:
EXAMPLES
Actual device names vary from one operating system to another. We use
/dev/dvd as a collective name or as symbolic link to the actual device
if you wish. Under Linux it will most likely be an ide-scsi device
such as "/dev/scd0." Under NetBSD/OpenBSD it has to be a character SCSI
CD-ROM device such as "/dev/rcd0c." Under Solaris it also has to be a
character SCSI/ATAPI CD-ROM device, e.g. "/dev/rdsk/c0t1d0s2" or
"/vol/dev/aliases/cdrom0." And likewise in HP-UX, IRIX and Mac OS X...

growisofs is also discussed in the OpenBSD FAQ.

No, that file tells you that the -scanbus option won't work on OpenBSD like you tried and to instead manually discover your device.
