upgrade failure: wd0 is not a valid root disk
For the last couple of days attempts to upgrade -current have failed when trying to mount the system, with the message: wd0 is not a valid root disk.
I tried 3 different versions of bsd.rd with the same result. I can't find anything about this message with Google. The system still starts normally if I don't try an upgrade. I haven't changed anything as far as I know. Very odd. Forgot to say, this is amd64. On a different macheine (i386) there is no problem Last edited by acampbell; 31st July 2017 at 09:27 AM. Thanks iggimi. (BTW I just tried fdisk -u but it made no difference.)
1 & 2 The boot process starts normally. I choose upgrade and my keyboard (uk). It then says: Code:
Available disks are: wd0 (which is correct) Pressing return or typing wd0 gives the error message: wd0 is not a valid root disk. 3. boot is on wd0a 4. dmesg: Code:

Thank you! This eliminates a number of possibilities, such as some sort of issue with full disk encryption, or a "jump" upgrade. You are attempting to upgrade a -current system from July 22.
There were two changes to the install.sub script since July 22, but neither seem to apply to this. And there was a single change to the amd64-specific install.md on July 28, which also doesn't appear to apply. Based on the information you provided, I believe your best bet is to submit a problem report to the bugs@ mailing list. Here are two links that can help: http://www.openbsd.org/report.html http://www.openbsd.org/mail.html |

OK will do. Thanks.

On second thought, that problem is specific to EFI booting, and you aren't using EFI on that hardware.
(If you're not sure, then you aren't using EFI. You'd know if you were using EFI/GPT booting instead of BIOS/MBR booting.) Last edited by jggimi; 31st July 2017 at 11:53 PM. Reason: clarity |

Yes, I'd seen that too, but I'm not using EFI.

Something else odd: I tried bsd.rd from the 6.1 release and this also failed (without the message), even though I have successfully done several upgrades which were later than the release.
I had to go back to 6.0 to find a bsd.rd that worked. I don't understand this. Some hardware fault??? Try reinstall??? |

The install and upgrade scripts are both Bourne shell scripts that use the same underlying shell script functions. So, while it's possible a fresh install would work, it's also possible it won't. The root cause has not been determined.
You may be able to watch the script run, with # sh -x upgrade but I've never done this myself, as I haven't had this sort of issue. The rescue kernel has many reduced-function tools to save real estate, and I don't know if the shell has had any function reductions.I'd report the problem, as recommended earlier. Yes, I've repoorted it, so I'll see what haopens. I'm reluctant to try reinstall because at least I have a working system at present.

upgrade failure: wd0 is not a valid root disk - Solved
Thanks to Robert Peichaer on the OBSD bugs list, I found the error: /mnt was missing on the boot drive. Repairing this has made bsd.work again.
