To the best of my understanding, GPT boot is not supported.

A kernel option was added in 2014 to be able to allow the kernel to read GPT tables. It requires a custom kernel, and is for experimentation and further GPT development.

The option is not enabled for GENERIC because GPT userland tools and bootloader integration are yet to be developed..
