Default Radeon HD 7950

Hello everyone,

I installed OpenBSD 6.7 on 2010 Mac Pro with Radeon HD 7950 3 GB.
Installed went smooth, I used lan ethernet since Broadcom WIFI will not work.
During install process , drivers that need to be installed were downloaded and installed.
startx into windows works fine with proper resolution. When running in windows mode either in X or XFCE, there are tiny green dots all over around the objects when starting X as normal user'
Not in the open solid color spaces.
Also windows freezes after running for a short time.
But, when starting X as su (super user) it runs fine with no issues.

OpenBSD 6.7 runs awesome on my Lenovo Thinkpad T530'

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Ludovit

At the top of your Xorg log you have this:
Code:
[ 711.023] (WW) checkDevMem: failed to open /dev/xf86 and /dev/mem
	(Operation not permitted)
Check that you have set 'machdep.allowaperture=1'
in /etc/sysctl.conf and reboot your machine
	refer to xf86(4) for details
Maybe start here by changing the value of machdep.allowaperature? Also it can have values from 0 to 3, so play around with those. Of course for more info check out the manpage on what these options do in particular.
If the issue persists though, screenshots would be nice.

That setting is irrelevant for cards using drm(4), which includes the OP's.

@OP: I think your card should be supported by amdgpu(4) so try
Code:
# mkdir -p /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d
# cp /usr/X11R6/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-amdgpu.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d
And have you tried xenodm? It runs X as a chrooted special user so it offers some security advantages over plain 'startx'.

The logs show drm(4) is loaded so I presume fw_update(1) was run after first boot? If not then try running that.

Don't do that. Ever.

EDIT: and an X.Org log from a frozen session would probably be useful.

Thank you Bronzu and Head_on_a_Stick,

I did try xenodm and it works and green spots were gone, but system keep freezing up, so
I decided to buy used Lenovo Thinkstation P500 tower. I will use drives, video cards, Accelsior NVMe 4x 1TB RAID 0 from the Mac Pro.
I was using MacOS mostly for photography editing for myself and wife's Real Estate.
I don't do it is much now and also OpenBSD has Gimp and Darktable.
Now I am getting to web development and OpenBSD is perfect for it. No more MacOS bloat.
I don't like to run iOS on my desktop. That is what MacOS become.
I am typing this from my old Lenovo Thinkpad T530 running guess what ...,,,OpenBSD 6.7
and it runs superbly.

I am so glad to be back to OpenBSD. I even donated some money to OpenBSD.

thank you again all and OpenBSD team for such a great OS.

No, it is Thinkstation P500, older model similar to P700, same box. I hope it will play well with OpenBSD 6.7.

My P700 runs fine with OpenBSD in dual-boot, except the nVidia video card, of course

Glad to hear that P700 runs good. I have 2 ATI video cards I could use.
How is on board sound working on P700?

I should get my P500 next week Tuesday. I can't wait to put OpenBSD 6.7 on it

System freezing: did your *OS* keep freezing, or just the XFCE screen?

I ran into problems *as a user* (I left root with FVWM) with screen freezing in Xfce in OpenBSD 6.6 and 6.7 and using Xenodm. Radeon HD 7700.

More specifically, Xfce would start and run for an unpredictable amount of time, then this would happen:
- the mouse could move
- no response to mouse clicks
- I could still switch to terminals and do anything on the commmand line.

The solution to my problem was turning off compositing. I haven't found another way around it.
Settings => Window Manager Tweaks => Compositor => Click off "Enable display compositing"

You will have to see if you can do your graphics work with display compositing off.

In addition to what Bronzu and Head_on_a_Stick wrote, have a look at the Xfce readme and compositing manager notes. There are some other notes about Xfce usage and display/graphics problems.

I thought I had set up to use amdgpu, but it seems I am using drm, so I'm going to try the steps he wrote and come back and edit this post with the outcome.

Edit:

So I confirmed I had two possible drivers in /usr/X11R6/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/, 10-amdgpu.conf and 10-radeon.conf

and ran Head_on_a_Stick's suggestion

[CODE=Head_on_a_Stick;69465]# mkdir -p /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d
# cp /usr/X11R6/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-amdgpu.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d[/CODE]

After doing that and a bit of reading (incl man xorg.conf) that left me confused, I'm clearly missing a lot, so some dumb questions:

- Why do those two steps? Shouldn't the driver be picked up from /usr/X11R6/share/X11/xorg.conf.d?

- If Xorg looks in /usr/X11R6/share/X11/xorg.conf.d, how does it choose which of 10-amdgpu.conf and 10-radeon.conf to use? I thought I had done something to set this when still on OBSD 6.6 (and maybe even wrote about it in daemonforums), but I can't find my notes now.

For what I do, fine !
Now, I use a Sennheiser headphone, plugged on the Jack
I don't use the integrated sound speaker, I cannot say anything about that...

Edit :
Oh, one more thing...
I don't know if it's the same kind of BIOS on P500 and P700, but I think so.
So be aware boot process on P700 is very very long. And I mean it...
Something like 30 seconds before the Lenovo splash screen and BIOS access, and a 2 minutes OS boot is a normal boot.
Seems really long, but it's OK, according to Lenovo.
This can be really surprising at the beginning, since my ThinkPad W500 boots in 13 seconds (Lenovo splash screen and OS).

ThinkStation Px00 series are designed to be workstation/server, so take time to check any parts of the computer before booting.
Of course, it also depends of the amount of RAM to check. With my 32 GB RAM, it takes some time...
