Usually when you send a message to a mailing list your name is going to show up if your email client is setup that way. I don't think it is a big deal. My name is all over ports and problem reports anyways. I have also never experienced a negative impact for being involved in the FreeBSD community; except for maybe some more spam since my email address is pretty much public record.

They already got spam posted. See http://forums.freebsd.org/showthread...=1595#post1595 for how long it lasts ....

I would if I could; but I am no artist.
> Shut up and hack! Now, that's something I can do. I sense an unwillingness to change the current theme, so before be bury this issue I would like to make a final point. I agree with DD that the fbsd forum is a bit hard on the eyes but atleast it looks/feels 'alive'. Going by the looks on this forum I feel as though it has no 'identity'. If you were making your homepage would you use the free template that possibly a thousand others are using? Or are you going to say that only content matters, nevermind that surfers don't care to give your page a second look? Are you going to use the same blue-on-blue like theme? Red is the colour of Fbsd and I suppose Obsd is yellow and Netbsd orange. But one things for sure blue is 'not' the colour of BSD. Last edited by ephemera; 20th November 2008 at 08:05 AM. |

So long as the primary colour is not white, nor black, I'm okay with it. There's nothing worse than looking at a black-on-white screen, or a white-on-black screen. It's very hard on the eyes.
Soft colours, with grey-ish backgrounds (similar to the current theme), is much easier on the eyes, and much easier to look at for more than 30 seconds at a time. |

a certain yellow-on-black popular (mid editing this
post I discovered on google's cache "quantcast.com" which reports 200k/monthly visitors ) hardware forum has super-easy-to-read at least from here... LOL on the other hand google's cache reports it as white-on-black. So until I login to it today I am clueless. OTOH the bsd-official forum theme I find less easy to read than this one. If it was changed to this one I'd be okay with it. (if that is a UserPanel option i've to discover in the next half hour, clueless again... )

I do kind of like the default theme.. it's nice on the eyes.. I wouldn't want something dark and distracting(black on red), or even light and distracting (yellow on white).
If you all decide to ditch this theme, please make it optional.. |
|
||||
Even if the theme is changed, there will still be people disliking it. It's pretty hard to please everyone in this world...

Well, it was on my todo list to work on a more BSD inspired theme and submit it, but atm it is something like #47 out of 128 on my todo list.... important, but not a major priority with so much else piled up.
I have no love for this forums look, but it does grow on you, just like vBulletin hehe. I agree with you whole heartily!

I was just wondering about the freebsd channel on youtube. I guess you can use gnash etc to view youtube. But since there is no official support for flash in freebsd and from what I understand, there are people in the freebsd world that are not too enthusiastic about flash, how come they chose youtube. Is youtube not a reason why flash is so big.
Since the people in charge of freebsd know what they are doing, I assume that there is a perfectly good reason, besides convenience too. But I admit I feel a bit confused, can someone explain this to me. |

Flash is proprietary.. originally owned by Macromedia, now owned by Adobe.
It is not open source, beyond a few recently published file format specifications.. it's a cancer of the Internet. So, the only options for people using alternative operating systems are.. 1) Unreliable Linux/Windows emulation.. 2) Alpha-quality reimplementation projects like gnash or swfdec.. 3) FLV stream capturers, sites like Youtube have a "flash wrapper" that plays FLV format video streams.. utilities exist to download these streams directly. I personally have a few additional options.. 4) Avoid flash utilizing websites entirely.. 5) Submit interoperability reports to tech support staffs... 6) Disown friends/family who send me links to YouTube/Misc Flash content. In the end, you'll need to decide what's most important.. a stable decent OS.. or Flash. |
