OpenBSD 4.6 Release
In something of a surprise event, OpenBSD 4.6 has just been released.
In a rather unusual fashion, the OpenBSD 4.6 release date was originally set for Oct 1st instead of the usual Nov 1st because of the Hackathon. Later it was postponed to the usual Nov 1st due to some problems with CD manufacturing, But since most people have already recieved their CD sets, it was decided to move the release date forward two weeks. \o/ OpenBSD 4.6 release page

That was surely unexpected, now I just need to stop procrastinating.

4.6 has been tagged several months ago, CURRENT is already way past it.
Here is some discussion & an explanation of the OpenBSD release process which may answer your question: http://www.daemonforums.org/showthread.php?t=3800 I found the video mentioned in the last post to provide a good overview of how things work & why thing work as they do.

The version number of -current (which is currently 4.6-current...) will change to 4.7-current at the beginning of the beta cycle. Beta cycles vary in length, & given that OpenBSD 4.7 is currently scheduled to be released 1April 2010, you can expect to see the version number change in -current sometime early next year. As many others have already stated, work on OpenBSD 4.7 has been ongoing since the OPENBSD_4_6_BASE tag was added to CVS at the end of May 2009. As jggimi has already mentioned, study Section 5.1 of the FAQ. It will build strong teeth too. |

Nice work jggimi, it's surely useful for new users.

Does/did 4.4 become officially unsupported the day 4.6 was released?

i dont know why some people think openbsd is more harder to deal with! its just the installer. i think its the same as FreeBSD with slightly difference in files.
|
|
|||
They are two distinct operating systems separated by many years of independently directed development.
Further work on the installer happened before the 4.6 release.. so anyone still complaining about it is just afraid of reading what's on the screen. |
|
||||
Maybe I'm a freako, but I found the OpenBSD installer, as shipped in 3.9, to be vastly easier to deal with then FreeBSD sysinstall, which I've used for years lol.

Many people look at the installer, see basic graphic-less text, and flinch.
As someone who used both the graphical Ubuntu and OpenSolaris installers recently, I can assure you that graphics != usability. As OpenBSDFan666 said, all you need to do is read be patient, grab a cup of coffee and some cookies, and just read the text and follow instructions. It's very easy, and the new 4.6 installer made things even easier.

It is important to remember that the targeted users of the OpenBSD Project are the developers themselves. They just happen to be altruistic enough to release their work to the rest of us heathens to use too. Although the installer may appear daunting to the newbie, it is actually preferred by the community. Once one understands what information is required & what configuration is desired, OpenBSD can be installed in less than 5 minutes on most platforms. I don't believe most GUI-based installers can make the same claim. |
