Smile Fun question-What's the correct pronunciation?

In most of India, Cheroot (pronounced chi-root) is used pejoratively.

So how do we pronounce chroot?
Is it SEE-EH-ROOT? or Cheroot?

I tend to say SEE-AITCH-root.
(feels like the wrong subforum for this...)

I had a discussion about pronouncing sudo with some Indian colleagues a few years ago. They pronounced it SOO-doo. I pronounced it as if it were the English word pseudo. I think we were both right.

Only when the original author posts a pronunciation guide, and you have also read it, should you ever worry about following someone else's pronunciation of an acronym. Unless you're in meetings, as I was when sudo came up, and pronunciation needs to be considered for clarity of understanding.

I've always pronounced it in one syllable: chroot. I guess the closest approximation would be TROOT, like "truth" but with a "t" sound on the end.

I'm totally weird...I always pronounce it "change root" and expect people to know that when I say "type change root" that mean chroot. I don't know why there are certain commands that I do that with. Like dir in DOS...I say "directory".

I work with a guy that came from a Solaris shop and he says 'US er' for /usr and I say 'user'

I "think it" much like it's spelled, unless really focusing on the meaning and then it's "change root". But not sure what would happen if I actually had to say it to someone else.

Not weird at all. I do the same thing. (Of course, we could both be weird.)

Reminds me of when I once told my dad, "I had to pick up some cds." and he being an accountant said "what bank did you got to?".

But the command is obviously pronounced "change directory" whereas the media is "cee dee", especially since I never know it it should be disk or disc.

So how come no one referenced this yet?

One day I was at a restaurant explaining process control to one of my disciples.
I was mentioning how we have to kill the children (child processes) if they become unresponsive. Or we can even set an alarm for the children to kill themselves. That the parent need to wait (wait3) and acknowledge that the child has died or else it will become a zombie.

The look of horror the woman sitting across had was unforgettable. I tried to explain it was a computer software thing but it was too late, she fled terrified, probably to call the police or something. I didn't really want to stick around too long to find out.
