Recording video stream
Hi there. What's the easiest way to record a video stream using Linux? I've tried VLC 0.94 but it won't connect. The url for the stream is either http://216.185.67.126:82/ or mms://216.185.67.126:82/. What would be the best app and method for recording a few minutes of this stream (for a presentation).
Thanks, Jon |

While I've never tried that (not enough bandwidth), so I'm not 100% sure it would work, but the first thing I'd look at is MPlayer. Hope it works for you.

Another +1 for mplayer.
$ mplayer -dumpstream mms://216.185.67.126:82/ It'll save whatever it captures in a file called stream.dump. |

Thanks. I tried mplayer -dumpstream <url> but it returns stream not seekable. Is there any way to find out what .asf or .wmv or whatever file is actually being streamed?

I tested and confirmed that mplayer can and does record the stream, ignore the codec warnings and don't kill the process.. to verify, it's a stream of unspecified vehicle traffic.
Also; it appears to be WMV format.. an older version. |

Edit to remove garbo.
BSDfan666 - thanks. I didn't realise that I was being impatient. So is that in a raw file format? Must I convert that somehow once I have enough video? Thanks, Jon |

No, as I said.. it's a WMV stream.. you can play the file afterwards, just ^C the process when you've recorded enough footage.

Thanks, and sorry - I didn't even see your comment about wmv, my mistake.
Anyways, thanks a bunch! Jon |
