Default sis 6330 on 4.6

Hello,

I have troubles with a laptop (acer aspire). It has a graphic card "sis 6330 VGA". On the net I found traces of people successfully using this graphic card on OpenBSD 4.5 and lower.

When I start X (startx) as a normal user or as root, I get a blank screen and the system just stops responding. Even ssh to it doesn't work anymore. There is nothing left to but shutting down the system with the power button.

When I restart the system the /var/log/Xorg.log is just empty.

For the record I tried using with and without a /etc/X11/xorg.conf.
(xorg.conf created uing xorgconfig)

Running "Xorg -configure" gives the same problem, the system hangs with a blank screen, no mouse, no keyboard.

I was so happy that the wirelesscard was working out of the box... but now its a graphic card (or so I presume) that gives me trouble.

Anyone knows about this problem? Is there a solution?

I guess I can try to use 4.5, not sure the wireless card will be working though.

How much of FAQ 11.3 have you followed, so far?

Wel what I did not yet try:
- vesa driver
- X -configure (if it is not the same as Xorg -configure)
- anothor monitor (I could connect an external monitos to the laptop)
- going through the SIS man pages in detail
I will try these these this evening.

Other things described in that FAQ are not usable for me since I have no Xorg logging and the system freezes even on Xorg -configure. And when it is freezed I can't even ssh to it.

I also noticed that the system's reaction to the command "startx" is unusaly slow to what I am used to.

I am fairly sure that the graphic card is not broken since it worked under XP before installing OpenBSD.

Have you tried a snapshot? perhaps you'll have a little more luck with this card.. if not, you can always send a message to bugs@ directly, or via sendbug(1).

http://www.openbsd.org/report.html
http://www.openbsd.org/mail.html

A full dmesg, and the output of pcidump(8) with full verbosity settings might help, but I'm not sure.

I've also been in situations where the log file has been empty after an early lockup of X, you might be able to get at least some output by connecting to the system via SSH and following the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file using tail(1) (..now you should have a partial of it in your terminal back buffer, which you can send to the developers).

It may not actually be locked up either, you could be sitting at a ddb> prompt.. awaiting further commands.. but the video is left uninitialized.

Do you have a swap partition configured? around 2*RAM size? enough room in /var for a memory dump? then trying pressing enter/return a few times and issuing the boot dump command (..blindly).

Give it awhile and you may see some disk activity, and eventually a reboot.. maybe savecore(8) will get you a kernel core dump, so you can use gdb(1) to get a trace and help the developers find the problem, more info in crash(8).

Good luck, keep us informed.

Note; The man page for xf86-video-sis is installed as sis(4), which conflicts with an Ethernet driver of the same name.

You can view the man page using man -a sis, just skip over the first page.

I'm running a Nov 2009 version of current in a laptop with an Sis 630 video chip. When I first bought the laptop I struggled mightly with the video and found this resource.
http://www.winischhofer.net/linuxsispart1.shtml
On the second page there are some example xorg.conf files that you may be able to tweak.

Wel I tried the vesa, had the same effect. System crashes.

Your suggestion of tailing the Xorg.log file from another box worked. However it didn't reveal any error.

I tried a Slackware 13.0 installation and the graphical card is working.

I will try the latest OpenBSD snapshot, perhaps that will work too.
