Default wd0 not found at install

I have been unable to install 4.6 or 4.7 on an old Asus C3 terminator with an WD 400JD-55SA1 SATA hard drive jumpered to 1.5. 4.5 would install as would 4.6 and 4.7 using ide drives.

If I use ukc to disable apm the drive is found but hangs with the dmesg
Quote:
wdc_atapi_intr: warning: reading only 14 of 18 bytes
If I do not disable apm the kernel does not hang but the pciide driver does not find any drives to install to.

I think the Via Chip set (VT6420 SATA) is kinda of buggy and I have noticed that FreeBSD 6.4 and 7.3 work but 8.0 does not (spurious interupts at irq11)

In NetBSD 5.02 I have to change the Phoenix BIOS setting to RAID for the drive to be recognized

Any suggestions to get a support version of OpenBSD running with an SATA drive would be appreciated

Did you look in the INSTALL.386 file for that particular card? The file doesn't list it.
Code:
VIA Technologies CX700, VT82C586/A/B, VT82C596A/B, VT82C686A/B,
		    VT8231, VT8366, VT8233, VT8235, VT8237, VT8237A/S, VT8251,
		    VT6410, VX700

Neither the install page, manual page, or website can contain a complete list of supported controllers.. almost all PCI IDE controllers comply with a basic specification and should work with pciide(4).

SATA typically emulates a PCI IDE controller for support with legacy systems, but you can typically enable AHCI in the BIOS.. which will be detected by ahci(4).

In this case, your disk will be sd(4) and not wd(4).

If it emulates a PCI IDE controller, wouldn't it be wd(4)?

If it's in PCI IDE controller emulation mode, yes, but as I said, if the BIOS supports it.. AHCI is an option.

If it's not showing up then there may be some other issue, he didn't post a full dmesg.

Thanks for the replies. I do not believe that my bios supports AHCI - at least no options that specifically use the term AHCI come up. I can enable on-chip SATA and if SATA is set IDE or RAID. I have the latest BIOS installed.

It is interesting that FreeBSD, OpenBSD and NetBSD all treat the driver specification differently. It works with out issues with FreeBSD 6.4/7.3 and Linux, requires an on-chip softraid setting in NetBSD and does not work at all in OpenBSD or FreeBSD 8.0

I went ahead in put FreeBSD 7.3 in.

I have this same problem when trying to boot the 4.7 release from i386/install47.iso.

Same chip (VT6420 SATA) and error (wdc_atapi_intr: warning: reading only 14 of 18 bytes) during boot. I'm not really clear on how to even post a dmesg of this issue because it hangs at this point, and does not continue booting like normal. If a dmesg included from 4.6 is still useful for something I can include that for reference (other than the error I think it looks mostly the same up to that point).

However, I have been running OpenBSD 4.6-Release and now I have updated to OpenBSD 4.6-Stable and both run relatively OK on my configuration. About once every couple months I was having some issue with the machine hanging, which I was hoping was resolved by something in 4.7. Failing to install that I decided my next best option was at least updating to 4.6-Stable, to see if perhaps one of those fixes covered my problem.

In regards to hardware listings (marcolino's post), I poked around a little and in pciide.c and there is an entry for it in the pciide_product_desc pciide_via_products structure:

{ PCI_PRODUCT_VIATECH_VT6420_SATA, /* VIA VT6420 SATA */
0,
sata_chip_map
}

So I'm guessing just the usual standard in this case?

This is the only one I can retrieve at the moment. Somewhere after the pciide lines is where 4.7 boot would lockup with the bytes read error.

Some Persistence at least lead to an explanation but unfortunately not a solution
