Farewell FreeBSD 5.x
It doesn't seem like long ago that official support for FreeBSD 4.x was discontinued, but now FreeBSD 5.x has also reached its end. This applies to ports support as well. As a side note, FreeBSD 6.1 and 6.2 are no longer supported either.
I have used FreeBSD since 4.8 and I have to say that I am pleased with how the project has progressed over the past few years. FreeBSD 5.x was a groundbreaking series and the improvements made upon it in 6.x and beyond have been amazing. Here's to the future! |
|
||||
I've used FreeBSD since 6.0-Release but I must third that ;-)
One way or the o ther, my searches on the net usualyl give me a feeling that FreeBSD 4.x is the one branch that just wont' die !

Please do not troll here (4.X is dead)
|
|

Not my intent, just stating what I've seen so often it must be a fact :-P
FreeBSD 8.0-Release will be an assume day imho.

It is not fact. 4.X is old, obscure, obsolete, less functional, slow(er), have less drivers, less features, more bugs, unmaintaned, broken, insecure, ...

I hope that it is not using historic SSH implementation with various security issues ...
I also now and then use FreeDOS, just for little fun. Maybe I could get BSD 4.3 from the net and set it up for desktop/worksation (or even server) Well I would not mention Linux 0.0.1 ... |
|
|||
What would you do with just a kernel?

Well... Not to go more OT but way back when you could boot off a linux floppy and then use a gnu floppy to exec emacs and a few other apps, or I've read >_>
And I'm glad I'm not just seeing FreeBSD 4.x boxes out of thin air !!!!

Some benchmarks I found that directly compare 7 to 4:
http://people.freebsd.org/~kris/scaling/dfly.html I love 4, and for its time it was arguably the superior server OS, but today unless you are running older hardware (ie, not supported in 7) you are wasting time and money... Last edited by Weaseal; 6th June 2008 at 08:40 AM. |

I ran my first "real" server off 4.8 and got hooked. For that alone I'll be more or less emotionally attached to 4.x for, well, getting me into all this.
I've since shifted all publicly-accesible servers to OpenBSD, but that first flirtation with FreeBSD 4.x will always stick.

Sad to see 5.x go Reminds me of how I felt when Jordan Hubbard left for Apple and we lost his posting on the maillist. I used to save about all of them. Very entertaining at times
Still not going to get rid of me 3.x, 4.x, or 5.x cd's! I can't find my 2.21 cd's, but hope I didn't finally toss them. Although I primarily use OpenBSD, I still thank FreeBSD for getting me into *bsd |
