If you accidentally use refresh form contents are also lost.

No, but that is likely the obvious solution. We are considering moving to a dedicated server. However, the unreliability of shared server space really annoys me. I can believe that this small amount of traffic is all ready choking the system.

Default Change your hosting provider?

Have you looked into other providers? I have a suggestion but didn't want to spam the thread.

IMO, it's not behaving as if it is choked, as in overloaded, it is behaving as if it's a contention -- almost like a quasi deadly embrace.

I'm not a LAMP expert, but, in the past, I have had to tackle SQL issues. Regardless of the brand -- MS SQL, Oracle, MySQL, POSTGRES, et al -- they all have worker threads and background threads (housekeeping). It's behaving as if there's a housekeeping thread lighting off and locking down user-visible commits.

I say this because my experience with this site stalling is regardless of time of day. The trigger is either time (interval), threshold, or event. It really doesn't "feel" like load.

All that said, you can rule the world with lighttpd alone, or lighttpd and postgres. (postgres for a bunch of reasons, but the key one being it is far more and better at self-tuning.)

opera has an option to "confirm shutdown"

I suppose I have to agree. This is not really an overload issue. The MySQL has simply been dropping out when it feels like it. (<--- Highly technical explanation, I know)

If all of the stars align this weekend (May 17-18), Carpetsmoker will be able to take us over to a dedicated server that is being provided by another member of the forums and, on that server, with any luck Carpetsmoker intends to be using lighttpd, though I am not sure what is his choice of database manager.

Nah, not for me. Not as smart as Firefox, firefox will as you for confirmation if there are more than 1 open tab, Opera always ask, even there is only 1 tab opened

Is the server running Unix?

Does it matter? Isn't it infinitely more important if the server is functioning properly?

Should we expect any significant downtime this weekend?

Not too much. Though I, for one, would find it appropriate that a *BSD forum should be served by a *BSD server.

A BSD forum should be hosted on a BSD server, it's rather hypocritical otherwise..

Not at this stage, but later, I would say yes. While I have nothing against Linux, I second what JMJ_coder said.

A forum should be hosted on a decent server & connection to support the amount of traffic and bandwidth the community and visitors generate.

For the administrators running the machine... As long as it's not Microsoft Windows or Novell Netware, who cares as long as it comes with a paycheck and keeps on truckin' ;-)

Performance does seem better and I add my thanks to all involved. We Scotts are well-mannered that way.
