Firstly, be aware that antivirus on a UNIX box is used to scan traffic or shared directories for Windows viruses, not for viral software that may be made for UNIX boxes. UNIX viruses are not seen in the wild, partially because UNIX boxes are not a big enough target, partially because the better security structures in UNIX make them less successful, partially because most viruses rely on attacks on the meatware (i.e. users who will click away OS warning messages and provide credentials), and the meatware adminning UNIX boxen tends to be of a higher calibre. <insert snooty-nosed sniff>

Installing two AV systems and having both scan traffic through your box is fine, although will more than double the load on your box. Remember that you are testing for things that might affect _other_ systems, not you own.

I love robbak's post, minus the "UNIX boxes are not a big enough target" lie.

We use multiple malware scanners on our mail servers, with ClamAV as the primary, and Kaspersky AV as the secondary. Clean messages get scanned twice, but infected messages get scanned once if ClamAV detects it and twice if ClamAV doesn't.

Using ClamAV and Bit Defender, both from ports, on my mailserver (using MailScanner to feed the mesages to them). No problem.
