Default OpenBSD VAX platform is no more, RIP

After much internal discussion, OpenBSD has officially discontinued support for the VAX architecture. In a series of commits, Theo de Raadt puts the platform to rest.

After much internal discussion
Only in OpenBSD would this require "much internal discussion" in 2016 ;-)

There was technical value in having the unique architecture in the pantheon, as it could highlight programming errors other architectures would not show. Emulation does not have the same functional value.

The discussion, I understand, was a cost benefit analysis of maintaining Project hardware.

I saw a post from one of the developers yesterday on reddit noting that at this time, the project has not yet determined how they will build 5.9-release and packages for the vax.

I would say every idealistic culture work that way. OpenBSD is just an exercise in idealism.

I haven't heard of changing OpenBSD's kernel to formally verified microkernel
Anyway, AFAIK OpenBSD is still the best system for me right now.

For future interested readers of this thread, it is always better to go back to the original discussion as opposed to trying to interpret a series of snarky comments. So here is what was posted on misc@:

http://marc.info/?t=145357929100001&r=1&w=2

Of greatest importance is Theo's remarks found at the end of the thread. Hardware has died, & it is no longer deemed important enough to attempt to replace it.
