I've observed BSDForums being down for at least an hour now. Maybe this is significant, maybe it is not, but it is most certainly irregular.

To provide context, note that this is the beginning of the month, & the first month since the community very publicly stated that we were abandoning BSDForums. I suspect that hosting charges are paid monthly, so Monday, June 2nd would have been the first business day of the month when BSDForums' Admin might have taken the opportunity to cancel service assuming he or the hosting company were actually watching.

So there are a number of (large) assumptions made here, but it might be worth watching in case anyone has any perverse interest.

...then I suspect that Admin or someone at the hosting company has noticed the spam -- not that it wasn't hard to spot.

No, it isn't, but you would need to point your browser to the forums first

Right now I'm getting this message:
"Sorry, this board is closed at the moment for maintenance for a few minutes."

There's all sorts of possibilities. I imagine the answer will be revealed sooner or later.

What will be interesting will be if he decides to try to renovate it. Perhaps, in the end, there will simply be three good BSD centric forums (plus of course, PCBSD's and DesktopBSD's forums, as well as others that I might have overlooked.)

If that did happen (Admin trying to renovate) let's try to remember that he provided a good site for us for many years, and keep acrimony and accusations to a minimum.

(Corey_James, acrimony means bitterness, ill-feeling, that sort of thing)

It appears the rampant spam has been discovered.

My point isn't that we should believe any promises made, just that there is no need for acrimony. Things will never be the same, that's the nature of IT.

This is turning out to be a very nice place, and thanks to the efforts of the mods (including, of course, CJ), there are also additional safeguards to prevent a recurrance of what happened on bsdforums. I guess what I'm saying is that we simply shouldn't wish him ill.

DesktopBSD's forum is as good as dead since years.

Nope, it's up and full of spam. I see Shakiraa and me_swallows users are still there...

Maybe it was related to: http://forums.theplanet.com/index.php?showtopic=90185

I don't wish him ill, but I'm not exactly happy about him lying to me either...

Funny how the forums are back (with no spam deleted)...
