Angry Frustrated Solaris user miss BSD alot

hi

i am having so many problems.

1) One day i decided to install Solaris.

It hated my ethernet card and i was
unable to get a connection.

So i went out and bought a card that
worked and success i was online with solaris.

A few times my connection failed and
i was advised to turn off wam so i did.

i had more problems with the new open solaris then
with solaris express edition with my connection.

i have solaris express on there now and
everything is perfect.

2) i had 4 drives to use 1 of them was for solaris
and the other 3 was for stored data.

2 of those drives are SATA that were not detected
in Solaris till i turned off raid,

Then i was able to mount the drives even though they were NTFS i had installed an NTFS tool for read only

i was told i should make my drives UFS
So i did that i made all my Drives Solaris2 file systems
Using their fdis partition tools

Finally i can mount all my UFS Drives
i dont lose a connection.

3) However i am Unable to write to any DVD+RW disks.

Each time i try it tells me this

Please replace the disc in the drive with a supported disc with at least 617.2 MiB free. The following disc types are supported:
DVD+R DL, DVD-RAM, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, CD-R, CD-RW

So i went and erased it from Windows Alcohol program
to make sure it was areased using quick erase.
and still no luck.

Seems i am only able to Use DVD-R or other DVDs
i am not sure why

i was unable to find help anywhere as there is suck a lack of support on solaris and they always trying to send me
to a Web Page of some cigar smoking guy offering me his services for a fee lol.

Rather then just telling me sorry your Drive does nto suport DVD+RW on Solaris

Solaris is the most advanced OS on the planet they say
but how come all the BSD Distros can let me write to DVD+RW Disks. Why does BSD have so much more.

4) My Other Problem is this

i installed FreeBSD hoping everything would be ok and
i was unable to mount my UFS Drives that i created using solaris.so i cant see my Data.

Also a program i tried called
UFS Explorer on Windows Vista
would not even see my UFS Drives
but why?

They are both great Operating Systems but FreeBSD has so much more to offer to to mention support and hardware that actually works.

Now i am Stuck deciding what to do
i have my Drives backed up i am not
worried about losing Data.

i Still want to create UFS but this time from FreeBSD
but do not know how at this time
as i am only familiar with the commands on solaris.
and if i create UFS from BSD will UFS Explorer see them from Windows Vista?

i have not installed BSD yet as my desktop

i just need some advice on where to start.
i mean like now in Solaris since i have my Data Backed up

i should format my drives and create what file system to
have them be seen on BSD once again.

i do not see an NTFS option but i do see fat32
and if i do install BSD how would io create
my Drives as UFS

The commands are so much more different in Solaris

For example if i wanted to know where my drives are so identify then i just type format.Yet in BSD i just type dmesg

The reason for the mount problem is probably because many different versions of unix but many different versions of the same file system.

The *BSD's are no exception, despite their very closely shared heritage the specifics of the UFS file system have *probably* evolved independently to much for full compatibility out of the box.

You can reform mat the disk easily, the handbook describes it. It basically amounts to using fdisk, disklabel (now named bsdlabel on freebsd), newfs, and editing /etc/fstab.

Default hi

Thank You

So its really a Post install as i see it
sysinstall

It does look so confusing to me compared to what
i been doing on Solaris.

If i choose dedicated mode for all my other extra drives
does that mean they will default to UFS which is what i want UFS
i dont want Windows to access them but i dont mind if solaris does.

This may take alot of time getting use to.

You see i am still using BSD as a web server and never gave up using it.
But as a desktop i been playing with solaris

Because i am having problems writing to a dvdrw disk
is the reason i am considering the change to BSD again as a desktop
which is a lame excuse to switch over to a different os but there
is absolutely no one out there to help me who knows what is wrong.

My Drive does read and write Dvds though but
not Dvd Rw on Solaris only on BSD it seems to work.

it's easy enough to slice up the disks, no need for using dangerously dedicated mode. Windows doesn't understand FreeBSDs UFS2 and will just mark it as an 'unkown' vulme and largely ignore it.

If you wish to share data on hard disks installed into the same machine with multiple OSes on that machine (e.g. multi-boot, dual-boot, triple-boot, etc) -> use a file system that all can understand.

For example my desktop triple boots Windows XP, GNU/Linux, and FreeBSD. Data storage and sharing is done via a set of FAT32 formated logical drives.

Default hi

@TerryP

it looks like i ran into a few problems.
i have no more room to dump and backup my data.
or i may be able to squeeze a little more.

i seen a few sites about the errors i was getting on writing to dvdrw.
a few ubuntu people solved the problem although i am using solaris.
some of the commands were similar.

i know my Dvd writer works fine for writing dvds on Solaris
heres what i get when i try it on a dvd rw

First of all i do not see a Disk show up on my desktop if its empty.
so i am not even sure if it mounts when its empty.

When i use a blank DVDR disk i get a prompt asking me what i want to do
but i get no prompt at all with a DVD+RW disk

OK i have a blank DVD+RW in here now

code:

cdrecord -v test-file

# cdrecord -v test-file
/usr/bin/cdrecord.bin: No write mode specified.
/usr/bin/cdrecord.bin: Asuming -tao mode.
/usr/bin/cdrecord.bin: Future versions of cdrecord may have different drive dependent defaults.
/usr/bin/cdrecord.bin: Continuing in 5 seconds...
/usr/bin/cdrecord.bin: No CD/DVD-Recorder device specified.
Usage: /usr/bin/cdrecord.bin [options] track1...trackn

Use /usr/bin/cdrecord.bin -help
to get a list of valid options.

Use /usr/bin/cdrecord.bin blank=help
to get a list of valid blanking options.

Use /usr/bin/cdrecord.bin dev=b,t,l driveropts=help -checkdrive
to get a list of drive specific options.

Use /usr/bin/cdrecord.bin dev=help
to get a list of possible SCSI transport specifiers.

i hope i can solve the problem for now writing to DVD+RW

i do not want to take any chances with Stored Data i have right now
So ill stay with Solaris as my Desktop for the time being

And since BSD is my Server on my other box i can still work with both
i should have listened to lvlamb about reading more before moving on.
but i wanted to see for myself.

Anyone have any ideas at all?

It seems to be picking up your device just fine. If you read the output again you'll see it's defaulting to TAO mode which it is also telling you is not supported for your device.

I don't use cdrecord-ProDVD but if the syntax is anything like regular cdrecord from cdrtools you might try using a -dao switch to force DAO mode.

have you tried using the 'cdrw' utility bundled with Solaris?

heatherval, you seem to always chose the more complicated things
A DVD+RW has, yet again, a life of it's own.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dvd%2Brw
Must first be blanked (you didn't said you did),
it also can be formatted, as any block device, with your file system of choice.
This should allow you to make a simple copy (cp).

Also, cdrecord ... eeerk!
Install dvd+rw-tools package
The growisofs command is a nice wrapper around cdrecord and mkisofs, makes many choices for you in the background based on the name of your files and your hardware.

heeeee

Yea well you remember i had OpenBSD on my Web Server

i needed an extra hard drive to Move all my Extra Data,
So i had taken it out and replaced it with a 40 gig drive,
and for some odd reason i can not get that drive as a Master in Bios no matter how i pin it.

Perhaps that is why when i try to install OpenBSD on that machine again it just tells me No Disks.
i hope i do get that working at some point
Not only with OpenBSD but with
cgi perl MYPHP MYSQL,

So i just Installed FreeBSD On that Server Box
and am using that as my Web Server for now
till i get some more insight on what went wrong,

The last time i was too lazy to check.
i still want to use OpenBSD on that machine.

On This machine i am using Geos on a commodore 64
off a 5 1/4 floppy disk just kidding.

Oh and no never did ever figure that PHP out even though i installed it so many ways and thought i added the proper ln the apache config file.

i only needed it for a time i wanted to run that Forum i once had on my XP Box

it was a Skinabble forum very nice looking.

And since i do not want to put my email address
on my Web page i also use to use cgi -perl

And dont even know how to do that in BSD as of yet.

i got a long way to go lol

i just hope the commands are the same or close when i restart my firewall rules on that machine
and restarting apache

And if the logs are still in /var/log/httpd-access

LOL you are so right i always choose the long complicated paths in everything i do lol

It is that friend of mine that influences me alot.
He uses Only Solaris at Work.
i told him i will put his photos on my Site later on tonight.

He was the one who first introduced me to windows 3.1
and zip Drives with games you can actually play lol

He works as a Network Admin and since i moved i can no longer see him so,
we just talk via email and phone at times when hes not too busy.

The DVD+RW tools i had installed once,
and didnt have a clue how to use it lol.
the readme was terrible.

The tools were sitting in a directory /opt/bin/dvd-something tools

Yes that Dam cdrecord said i was not allowed to Blank
the DVDRW so i went and did a full format from a windows machine
using alcohol lol (not drinking it folks)

But that is the wrong to do it way isnt it?

Pull the plu, take a breather, have a life.
Sleep a couple of days without powering on that thinghies with a keyboard you use as a memory/brain prothesis.
After a week or so you will have a better idea of what you gonna do.

As ai-danno said, join the dark side. For production and data I only trust Open.
Other OSes are on multi-boot. Even using Open as application server (writing this post on Windows, Xming'd an PuTTYied/ssh to the server).

You and danno Both must know the only
reason i prefer OpenBSD as my Web Server
over FreeBSD is because,

i think the blow fish Looks much cuter and more
trusting then a Devil with a pitch Fork.

dvd+rw-format -force /dev/dvd

unable to open("/dev/dvd"): No such file or directory

dvd+rw-mediainfo /dev/dvd

unable to open: No such file or directory
