Remote Installation of *BSD
Hello,
Certainly *BSD can be installed over the network (i.e., NFS, FTP, etc.). But, usually that is precipitated by putting in some sort of boot media - either from flash or disk. What if you wanted to install *BSD without being physically there. Say, a brand new server is installed and it is in Europe - but you're in New York - and you want to put *BSD on it with a fresh hard drive. Or say that you're data is hopelessly corrupted but the hardware is fine - you need to reinstall *BSD but the server is 3000 miles away. Or say that the server currently has Linux or Windows on it and you want to migrate to *BSD. Is it possible to remotely install *BSD?

I wrote an elaborate post, but I don't believe it's worth inclusion... a modified bsd.rd kernel exists for OpenBSD that includes an OpenSSH daemon, but that alone will not allow you to install an OS on the system.
http://erdelynet.com/category/tech/yaifo/ You need to be sure it's a real system, not a emulated or "Virtual Private Server", and you require permission from the people you're leasing from. It's possible, I'm not going to lie... but you would need to prepare a disk image with the above custom kernel and write it directly to your servers hard drive, but if you accidentally make a mistake, you won't be able to fix it. |

There's the depenguinator that allows you to install BSD over an existing Linux installation. However, I am unaware of a mechanism, short of netbooting from a local source, to install BSD from "scratch."
