Changing IP to host www, mail and etc in FreeBSSD
To All out there:
I have an PPPoE ADSL connection (Broadband service) 24 x7 and I planned to use its services even am not at home. Used its services means: I will put up a domain where www, mail, ftp and etc will be pointed to my changing/varying ip addresses. sample: www.mydomain.com: Internet <==> [[DNS equivalent][GateWay] ===[LAN / www/mail/ftp/ssh] sample: mail.mydomain.com: Internet <==> [[DNS equivalent][GateWay] ===[LAN / www/mail/ftp/ssh] I know that this is possible now but I don't have an idea on how to make this work. If you have some inputs to this I am advancing my warmth thanks to you guys. Just to inform you that I had already settled a domain for 1 year for this personal project. Regards, Neubie |

1) Register a domain (Done, you say)
2) Get an account with Free DNS service (eg: DynDNS.org, ZoneEdit.com, No-IP, etc) 3) Set-up your domain to use No. 2 as DNS 4) Configure No. 2 to point to your dynamic IP 5) Set up your services (www, smtp, etc) 6) Set up a script, program, cron job to update your IP with No. 2 when it changes 7) Test, test, test again.

@neubie: It's very confusing when you paste contents from a post you're replying to (with no tags) and then quote your reply. Most people will expect to see the reverse. I had to look at this thread a few times to figure out what was going on.
Google can point you to many tutorials on setting up a cronjob. There is also good documentation on the system -- see the manpages for crontab(5).

Sorry for mis-representing my words there.
I finally got the whole picture and now I am going to use ddclient to update dyndns.org server regarding my IP. I have now the idea of how to do the cronjob - (Thanks for people like you guys) I have not enough time to fully complete this project. I will continue with it and hopefully I can finish the job the soonest. Thanks to All. Neubie *If I encounter problems again, I will have it posted again here. |
