Default Cups + USB-Printer

Hi there,

since OpenBSD 4.3 the Gutenprint drivers are available and yesterday I have tried to install Cups with Gutenprint on my Epson C42UX inkjet printer (an older, cheap model that runs with Cups and Gutenprint perfectly under Debian).

I've installed cups and ghostscript, exchanged ghostscript and installed ghostscript-cups (via "pkg_add -r") and then, as last step, I've installed Gutenprint and Gutenprint-Cups.

In the Browserinterface (localhost:631) I could choose the driver for my printer and everything looked perfect.

But when I try to print a testpage nothing happens at the printer. A look into /var/log/cups/error-log shows:

Quote:

E [18/May/2008:12:19:58 +0200] [Job 10] Unable to open USB device "usb:/dev/ulpt

When I look for "ls -l /dev/ulpt0" it shows:

Quote:
# ls -l /dev/ulpt0
crw-rw---- 1 root wheel 64, 0 Apr 17 23:53 /dev/ulpt0
My user is member of the group "wheel"

And when I try out "chmod 666 /dev/ulpt0" the printer starts printing nonsense (a clutter of letters and symbols).

So, what have I done wrong or which step is missing?

... still not working

But some new info: As I said - changing permission on /dev/ulpt0 from 660 to 666 makes my printer print crap.

And in the /var/log/cups/error-log the "permission denied" error is replaced by a different one:

Quote:
E [18/May/2008:19:36:08 +0200] [Job 15] Unable to write print data: Input/output
error
Any ideas, how to solve this?

Hey.
I had this bug twice on OpenBSD, some time earlier and nowadays with 4.3.
First I modified one line in /etc/cups/printers.conf (the one you have bolded):
Code:
DeviceURI file:/dev/ulpt0
It helped some time ago. But not with 4.3, so I removed package and installed cups from ports, of course I've also modfied the line and it works fine...

I'm following stable ports tree.

Good luck.

... hmmm, interesting discussion

Anyway, just a few words in favor of the topic:

In the meantime I've removed cups and configured lpd (using foomatic-db, foomatic-db-engine, foomatic-db-gutenprint). This worked - almost. Using Abiword, the printer just went fine. But it doesn't work with any other application.

And before I could investigate this any further my printer had some kind of mechanical malfunction and - broke.

So right now, I'm trying to figure out, which laserprinter would be the best choice.

Any ideas?
