Default Rsh/rsync problems

With no visible reason why, rsh and rsync+rsh stopped working for me.
When I run rsync, I get this message:

Code:
rcmd: socket: Can't assign requested address
rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (0 bytes received so far) [sender]
rsync error: error in rsync protocol data stream (code 12) at io.c(468) [sender=2.6.8]
rsync exited with error code 12
I checked /var/log/messages and I saw repeated lines that looked like the following:

Code:
rshd[68618]: can't get stderr port: Can't assign requested address
What could be causing it? Any hints guys?

Why are you using rsh instead of ssh? that's totally not recommended...

Why? I don't know. That's the same question that I asked my employer before, and I didn't get a decent answer. And I have to live with it and somehow make things work. :-(

i understand that - i have to use rsh and telnet at work too. At least you have the luxury of rsync :P

I have to fire off rsh from inetd - is that what you're doing ?

can you post your inetd.conf ?

Here's the inetd.conf:
