Default openbsd does not see all ram (4g)

I've just put a second 2g ram stick into my new laptop, but althought bios reports is fine (4096M), OpenBSD only reports

Check this thread, it's got a different starting point, but the answers will help you with your question. Especially this one and this one.

Also see this presentation (though a bit technical): http://www.openbsd.org/papers/nyc2006/index.html

It's not very clear to me:
I'm seeing only 3g of ram because the rest is "eaten" up by video memory, or simply the system is not able to see it?
If so, why does Vista show 4g?

System doesn't see it. PAE was probably turned on in Vista so Vista sees it, or it's 64-bit Vista.

There is nothing wrong with your system. 3Gb is practical maximum for i386 architecture. If you want to use all 4Gb you should install amd64 version of OpenBSD. At this point OpenBSD lacks technical capabilities to utilize more than 4Gb memory even on amd64 version. However extensive work and testing has been done to improve the situation. OpenBSD also uses n:1 multithreading model which means for instance that MySQL will not see any
performance benefit on bsd.mp kernel.

If you need such things, I would suggest you that you go with NetBSD or FreeBSD unless you need ultra secure data base. I personally would probably go with NetBSD. I would also check out OpenSolaris. There are lots of interesting things happening there but I am not familiar with Solaris on i386 so you will have to investigate.

well 4g of ram are not the most important thing, I will hardly ever need that much, but since they are there, it would be nice if they were available.
Before buying the laptop I was considering switching to freebsd, and I have tried to install it on my old box. And as when I did try in the past, I always get all kinds of errors during install, some package I want to install does not find dependencies etc. I am probably just not very expert in freebsd or not very lucky. I might try once more.
thank you

Don't install anything except the base OS from the FreeBSD install CDs. sysinstall is not very good at doing anything except installing the OS. Installing packages, configuring things, etc should all be done using the OS tools, once the OS has booted.

To install packages after the OS is installed, just use pkg_add -r appname.

the problems I get during install of FreeBSD are related to sysinstall which I personally find confusing.
Problems with packages come after, I probably have been unlucky or something, can't remember which packages were. Also, FreeBSD has an older version of ion, which is my favourite wm until now.

If you want to use all 4Gb you should install amd64 version of OpenBSD
Does it mean I can install a amd64 version on a i386 machine? Is it any worth the effort? Would everything work just like with the i386 version?

The Intel Core 2 Duo supports "Intel 64" which is Intel's reimplementation of AMD's 64-bit extension to the x86 architecture (Long Mode).

(Some Intel processors lack support for important PAE NX bit, which means those machines will run without any W^X support -- it is thus safer to run those machines in i386 mode).
As such, you might notice some additional memory using the amd64 port.. but "bigmem" (>4GB) still isn't supported yet.

The 32-bit i386 (Protected Mode) can only access 32-bit's of address space.. 2^32 (2 to the power of 32) is == 4294967296 bytes (4GB).

RAM is not the only thing mapped into physical address space, other memory mapped devices reserve some of the valuable real-estate for their own purposes.. AGP aperture.. PCI memory ranges.. legacy ISA devices (serial, parallel, floppy, FPU, etc).

Enhancements were introduced to extend the physical address space, PAE and PSE36.. but the x86 is still fundamentally 32-bit by design.. registers and pointer sizes.. so some clever paging tricks are required to use more then that.

Even if OpenBSD/i386 supported PAE/PSE36.. you would still be limited to a theoretical maximum of 4GB of virtual address space for user land processes, which is further limited by other architectural/OS limitations to 2GB of space.

It really is a complex and complicated subject, but unless you rely on and proprietary 32-bit only ports.. using OpenBSD/amd64 might just be beneficial in the long run.

Hope that helps.

thanks, I'll try and install the amd64 port

...

I've just tried to boot the bsd.rd from the amd64 port, going into shell and running dmesg still shows only 3028M of real ram, does it mean it does not see it either and would not see it even after a full install?

This was an error on my side, both the i386 and amd64 ports determine available memory using the same method.. they obtain a "memory map" from the BIOS.

It would appear that the remaining memory is mapped above 4GB physical, thus you won't be able to use it until the amd64 platform supports it.

The i386 port will probably never support PAE,PSE36.. 3rd party patches have existed to add support for it, but it'll probably never be supported officially.

So you won't be able to utilize the additional memory in 4.5 or 4.6, but perhaps the developers will work on "bigmem" support for 4.7.

Sorry about that.

The thread you are referencing is nearly a year old.

More recent discussion (within the last month...) can be found at the following:

...which is more somber in tone. In particular, pay attention to Claudio's response. Accessing 4GB of memory is not yet ready in OpenBSD.

There is a very real & simple way -- donate to the project. Better yet, organize many users to make a sizable donation to the project.
