Yes, it is slow and cumbersome. I use it only when I need decent (but not outstanding) Word compatibility for something quick. Otherwise, I use Word in VM or on a real Win box. When Word compatibility is not so important, I use Abiword. I write things using text formatters, so that is no issue.

I've never had much luck with the ppt clone. There I just use Office. I don't care much for the spreadsheet Calc either.

I know this is not very clean approach to working with these sorts of files, but that's what I do.

How is about IBM Lotus Symphony? It is free but it is just for Linux:

Never tried it. I think that began life as Ami, which I never used. WordPerfect, OTOH, was a very good product that I still use for some things.

There is no official package but good-day.net provide a binary package for many versions of FreeBSD and many version of OpenOffice.

Seems that it will gonna change since FreeBSD 7.1-RELEASE 'cause current BETA already has an up to date OpenOffice.org package:
ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/re...rg-2.4.1_2.tbz

I had also added a feature request for IBM Symphony to be avialable on FreeBSD, you may add your comments and requests too:

Linux is not UNIX! Face it! It is not an insult. It is fact: GNU is a recursive acronym for “GNU's Not UNIX”.
