Default uncovering network info?

I am running Windows XP and I am unsure where to find my proxy settings so I can transfer this info to my Linux distro so I can access the internet. It's like finding a needle in a haystack.

If you do not know where such configuration settings reside.. how do you know that you need them?

Typically one configures a proxy server per each application that will be using it, but I do recall hearing that in Windows.. other applications can gleam proxy settings from "Internet Explorer".

So again, what lead you to believe you're even using a proxy server?

Open Internet Explorer, click on Tools-->Internet Options-->Connections-->LAN Settings. It should be in the Proxy Server section at the bottom of that window. If it is not there, it may be configured by policy, in which case you will have to ask your friendly neighborhood network admin.
