The router is fine, you need IEEE 802.11g, IEEE 802.11b, IEEE 802.11n devices.

I doubt the USB adapter will work but don't quote me.

Thanks yes it is Linksy WUSB300N
300Mbps 802.11n Wireless Network Adapter

i just hope the USB adapter works on Solaris and/or BSD
i hope so anyways.

Actually i only need the adapter on my Boyfriends Networked Computer who uses XP and Vista.

My Server is right next to the router along with ,my PC
They both can be directly wired to the router .

I was under the impression that it didn't work for USB ones but hey, it's worth a try ;-)

So you think G as abosed to n is better/
i only travel now less then 7mbps so i not even sure why i need something that does 300mbps.

Well my friend who uses Solaris at his job.
He is allowed and not allowed to say certain
things about Solaris lol. please!!

Anyways he had recommended me
any 80211n 4 port 100 mbps since
i use 4 ports all the time.

So i looked up ones that were 80211N and that is what i came up with since Linksys is my favorite brand right now.

i am waiting to hear from him about that adapter to find out if it will work or not.

You had mentioned something about a
network driver interface possibly working.
i have no knowledge of any of that as this
wireless technology is pretty new to me as
i always prefered wires.

(with the exception of cellphones)

i just hope there is another type of adapter i can use if not USB that will work with that router.

Cause i sure dont understand any of this lol

They sure are not specific on that tigers web site
of exactly what i need.

Well the only thing that is USB is that adapter.

The Router (fortunatly) is also wired for me to use it
on my other 3 my computers

But my boyfriends which will be the Networked on a wireless Box using Xp -or vista.

He complains too much all the time
about tripping over cables..

But i always like to have something working anyways in case i decide to move my machines around the room as well sometime for that kind of money,

i can buy the router seperatly and hope they have an adapter that is not USB but i dont understand any of this anyways.i dont know what else there is if not USB that is wireless as an adapter.

Thanks for the reply Just the same

The only problem I see with 80211N is that most drivers I know of only have A/B/G cards listed in there cards known to work sections.

But it is still good that i can use the thing wired as well and just have one
adapter for my Boyfriends PC runnign XP or Vista so ill still be safe and
be able to use that router and just keep my BSDServer wired
and my Solaris Box Wired

A friend of mine told me that

Its very tricky to get any wireless card working for a Linux or UNIX based system.

Especially for UNIX, since it's usually runs on servers hardwired to the network,

Not a personal computer connecting wirelessly.

On the Open Solaris site, they list the few wireless cards they currently support:

http://solaris-x86.org/software/drivers/

Solaris WiFi team is working on adding support for some of the most popular wireless network cards to Solaris. All of the drivers and tools produced by the team will be pre-released to the OpenSolaris community and then integrated into Solaris.

At the moment there is support for:

Atheros 52xx Chipset,
* Intel Pro/Wireless 2100 Chipset,
* Intel Pro/Wireless 2200BG/2915ABG Chipsets,
* 32-bit PC Cards.
* Unless you get one of the specific Atheros or Intel chipsets on your wireless card, it's going to be a crapshoot if it works or not.

At any rate,
the wireless router i mentioned would work fine.(he says)

The USB wireless device is somewhat slower and bulkier than a card you could put into your system though,

But they will work. For a laptop though, I'd prefer a built-in wireless or PCMCIA or other PC card ,
rather than have an external device dangling off.

Those are better for desktops that you don't move around and aren't near enough to the router to hardwire it.

And it sounds like it makes some sense

Default Follow up on router

i wound up getting the dir-655 extreme dlink router
and i love it for just surfing the web on my laptop.
and keeping it as a firewall.

http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=530

it did take me a while for me to understand how to get it up and running but i love its firewall rules, and everything else about it. as well as other features that my
Linksys did not have.

it took me a while to get my Linksys with vonage working behind the wireless as well.

Although i keep my main machines BSD and Solaris
wired my Boyfriends is on a wireless.

i from time to time use an adapter from a laptop using XP as i dont know at this time how to use it on BSD or Solaris.
